That would have made way too much sense. Tariffs have a place, but its to protect from unfair competition...like the Chicoms subsidizing industries and then flooding markets with materials at a loss for the first few years of operation.

Yep. When your ag industry is a major exporter tariffs hurt that industry.
Tariffs on steel, aluminum, etc are retarded when Trump states he wants things built in America. We don’t have the industrial base without buildout first. Tariffs make the build out 20%+ more expensive.

It gives me a case of the red a** when I job search large refining company and over 75% of their engineering jobs are in Bengaluru, India. Then I look at 50% of our out of college hires and I get it. Half of US engineering grads aren't where they need to be.
Coming soon Bengaluru and the 50% in the US that suck are going to be SOL. AI will soon be capable of doing the cookie cutter engineering and the work that's thrown at the bottom 50%.

Rare earths aren't rare. The West has just let China do the processing because its environmentally nasty. So keeping the REM's out of adversaries isn't a good reason, for those who bother to look.
Trump has a history of throwing people under the bus if they become a problem or PR issue. Denmark shouldn't think that something they did for another president 20+ years ago will sway Trump.
