Wow

I shared this note with the Washington Post team this morning:
I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages.
We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.
There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.
I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical — it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.
I offered David Shipley, whom I greatly admire, the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer wasn’t “hell yes,” then it had to be “no.” After careful consideration, David decided to step away. This is a significant shift, it won’t be easy, and it will require 100% commitment — I respect his decision. We’ll be searching for a new Opinion Editor to own this new direction.
I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. I’m excited for us together to fill that void.
Jeff

Even if he truly does this it'll only be for a little bit of time before they go back to their regularly scheduled gaslighting

I’m old enough to remember when Democrats pretended to care about personal liberties.

Taking WaPo from leftist tabloid to any level of respect will be miraculous if he does it without completely cleaning house.

Its great they will start writing about it from a pro point of view, but this kind of highlights the real issue with our media. It should be a completely unnecessary announcement to make.
They shouldn't be pro or against anything, they should be reporting the news as it is. If they want to write opinion pieces, they should have enough diversity of thought to offer opinion pieces from multiple points of view. Going from only writing for one point of view and then switching to only writing from another point of view, even if it is one I agree with, isn't really a good thing.

Oh, they care about personal liberties. They're openly against them.

Agreed.

Personal liberty and free markets are at the core of this nation and this rag, the Washington Post, completely let their negative view of that fact get out of hand in terms of their opinion writing, editorial controls and where they worked to steer people‘s view of issues, politicians and people.
I agree that a solid paper and op Ed would always be open to multiple views from differing people if it was run as a paper. I am no Bezos fan and who knows if he is truly committed to this new path or just diverting in the face of opportunity. In any event, I will credit him at this point for putting the stake in the ground and attempting to change course at WaPo.

We share the belief, held by our country’s Founders and enshrined in the First Amendment, that an independent news media is vital to the health of the republic.
This is the only part of this that I actually believe. It's not about principles, its about being the only one in the marketplace offering a particular point of view and hoping to profit off all of it. It's about money and nothing else.

You’re wrong. Men like Zuck and Bezos are true believers in Individualism, as they are also its exemplars. They were intimidated into accepting Woke culture, which is shameful, but it cannot be their lodestar.

Well, there goes the rest of their subscribers. He will have to do a really good job at this to attract new "free market" subscribers.

I think the real issue here, is that the purpose of an opinion column is defeated by saying you can only write an opinion supporting X, Y, Z, which is what they are now saying they will do.
If a newspaper came out and said their writers can only write pro socialism opinions I’d be saying the exact same thing.

The entirety of Big Tech was under the boot of FedGov and has been liberated...
Your seeing Elon, Bezos, Andreeson, Zuck (to a lesser extent) all come out of their cocoon.
It's criminal what the commie left did these last 20 years to this country.

I agree with this- it was wholly evident during covid and other recent events.

I don't think so man.. these guys were under threat.
They are businessmen first... left to themselves, I would expect a strong center/right business and center/left social presence.
