At What Gas Price Level Do You Seriously Cut Back?

The worst was still in 2008 during the financial crisis. For most areas the peak price hit around $4.25/gallon in 2008, equivalent to around $6.55/gallon today. It felt like you could barely go anywhere.
Biden wasn't quite as bad, but I remember seeing that, at it's peak, in today's prices it was around $5.50/gallon.
At our current rate, I think you see significant consumer change at $5.00/gallon, such as more carpooling, more combined trips, etc. I think $6.00/gallon is when we start to see real economic collapse.
For me personally, I would give myself the same level. $5.00/gallon, I'm trying to cut back but living my life. $6.00/gallon, I'm saving any driving for the weekend, making very short trips and cutting way back on going out in general.

You have to be using a significant amount of gas and living outside your means to consider cutting back, which makes no sense if you’re already using a significant amount.

You do realize that easily over 50% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck right? So even a small increase impacts them. And a huge amount of Americans couldn't even afford an emergency $1,000 bill.
It's different than 2008. 2008 was terrible but it was largely only gas prices that were impacted. The last couple of years, especially this year, has been worse, as everyone is getting hit from all angles.
It's not just gas anymore or consumer discretionary spending. Groceries are insanely higher than 2008. Insurance is insanely higher. Rents have become downright unaffordable in even mediocre complexes. Taxes and Utility bills have gone up. We're talking about the essentials here. It's different now when people are getting hit from every direction.

I'm well off enough and while I might cut back at higher prices, I would still have no challenges driving when needed. But I'll admit that if gas prices went to $20/gallon, all my driving is pretty much instantly stopped.
I know it wouldn't matter, as at $20/gallon you are seeing complete economic collapse and we go into a depression. But you can't convince me that gas could go $20/gallon or $40/gallon and you wouldn't change your driving habits at all.

A tank of gas in Europe for a small car is $100. Our gas is still pretty cheap.

None for me. Cars are literally outlawed where I live, so all local travel is by horse, carriage, bicycle, or on foot. I’m feeling zero direct pain at the pump. I’m just hoping diesel comes down, because that price works its way into damn near everything else.

I put $30 worth of gas in my car every weekend after putting $40 on my Starbucks card. And I don't leave a tip at the gas station.
