California Gov. Gavin Newsom was in Michigan over the weekend to campaign for Democrats, taking time to pander and fearmonger to Black churchgoers in Detroit.

“The reverend reminds us, people are struggling, people are suffering, and that it’s not just faith, it’s works. As we pray, we have to move our feet,” Newsom told congregants during remarks at Fellowship Chapel in Detroit on Sunday.



“And I will tell you … we’ve got work to do,” he said. “I don’t want to get political, reverend, but we have an invasive species in the White House.”

“These guys are ruthless, they want to bring us back to a pre-1960s world,” Newsom claimed. “They want to put America in reverse.”

Newsom offered a history lesson on when Blacks and whites gained government permission to intermarry, and alleged the expansion of all rights, from voting rights, to LGBTQ “rights,” to civil rights, is at stake in the 2026 elections.

“We have someone in the White House who wants to put America in reverse,” he insisted. “They’re rewriting history, censoring historical facts. DEI, ESG, everything with three letters.

“Anti-woke is nothing more than anti-Black,” he said. “We know that.”

Newsom promised congregants that Democrats “have your back,” but insisted “it’s not about politics.”

“It’s about who we are and what we’re capable of becoming,” the governor said. “The Spirit of Isaiah, to be repairers of the breach. And that’s what we’re all here to do.”
