Shoulder if the deer is within 100 yards. Double lungs past 100.
Good summary. I'll also add that I like shoulder shot on an evening hunt, especially if the tracking's gonna be hard because of nearby thicket, marsh, etc. In addition, w/ the high shoulder shot, be sure your bullet is tough enough to enter and exit both shoulder blades. Not much meat's gonna be lost w/ a shoulder shot.
The neck shot is also good if the circumstances are right and you're a good enough marksman and know deer anatomy well.
Of the three deer I shot this year, one was a high shoulder shot and dropped on the spot (7-08 w/ 120 gr Barnes TTSX in 15" handgun). The other two were double lung shots. One ran about 60 yards w/ a good blood trail (260 Rem w/ 123 gr Hornady SST in 15" handgun) and the other ran about 100 yards (same gun w/ 125 gr Nosler Partition) w/ NO blood trail until the last 10 yards. I still don't understand the last deer as both humerus bones were broken (the long bone that attaches to the shoulder blade) and the entrance/exit wounds were large. Goes to show you just never know how a shot deer's gonna behave.

Real high about 4 inches behind shoulder. Either drop them if you hit spine or double lung.

Neck shot with a 30.06, the drop instantly, never have tracked one.
How does this get so many downvotes? So many people afraid their pride will take a hit missing a neck shot so they settle with a shoulder shot?
I’m not too proud to admit that I don’t always make a perfect shot.I shoot for double lungs behind the shoulder.I’ve heard too many stories about deer that dropped like rocks and then got up and ran off.Undoubtedly their neck bone was grazed which temporarily paralyzed them.Double lungs they might run a little ways but when they go down they don’t get back up.
If I hunted in the marsh or around lots of water I would shoot for shoulders.

Or that you'll shoot him 2 inches low and blow his esophagus in half and he'll die of starvation over the next few weeks.? I'm not sure why y'all cant see the issue with this.
For illustration purposes...

First, why do you need a .30-06 for neck shots? Just get a lighter caliber.
Second, the neck is a smaller kill zone than the lungs. Why not aim for the larger kill zone?
Neck shots are a gimmick for those who aren’t after big bucks. On a mature buck, take the first good kill shot you get. Often, that won’t be a neck or even broad side. Also, taxidermist can sew up holes, but why bugger up the cape?

Thats why I shoot lots of deer twice. I try to force myself to keep the crosshairs on it for a full 5 minutes. Head comes up? Shoot. Still obviously breathing hard? Shoot. Starts any attempt to get up? Shoot.
I aint having that shite happen to me.

What are yall thoughts about an arse shot, ever had to take one?

I aim slightly behind the shoulder between 1/3 and 1/2 way up. There’s always a chance that a deer will run after the shot, but I want to minimize the chance that the deer is injured but continues to live. I’d rather feed coyotes and vultures than wound a deer.

It’s a devastating shot if executed correctly with the right bullet. I had a chance at a 125ish buck walking away into a tunnel of a thicket at about 90yrds, i put it right up the ol poot shoot and the 150gr nosler partion traveled almost the entire length of the body tearing up all the good stuff.

Made this shot by mistake once. Deer went about ten feet. Shot for back of the neck but the deer was really close . Couldn’t find an entry hole anywhere. Must have went right up the bunghole man did we laugh

Never had to but absolutely would if the situation called for it.
I've seen a few shot up the arse and it definitely works but its just so mess. 100% gut bustage.

Texas heart shot can work. I had a big 8 pt trotting away and shot him with the Texas heart shot. Killing shot but awful messy.
