Impressive

Just blessed!! I have seen so many kids who were truly raised up good turn out bad. I am truly fortunate that I knew both of mine had their heads on right from an early age.

re: Balaclava vs Neck Gaiter + Beanie?

Blaze orange Ball cap, blaze orange beanie and a neck gaiter.
Walk in or hot just a ball cap. Starts getting cold put neck gaiter on , gets colder put beanie over ball cap and pull beanie over the top of all of it like a ninja.
My son started paying all his bills gas truck insurance and cell phone when he turned 16, once he graduated he went to community college and lived at home and worked full time and paid what TOPS didn’t pay. We kept telling him to save enough to not have to pay PMI on his first house and he did. He was able to buy my wife’s grandmothers house and we gave him her portion of the inheritance since he had saved almost 50k so he ended up with almost 90k equity in it at purchase.
My daughter has worked since 16 and was able to get additional scholarships in addition to tops. We pay her portion of an apartment as well as give her an allowance each month. But she is expected to work and pay her own gas/spending money. We have told her we will pay for classes she passes and she’s on the hook for any she drops.
Best thing I did was promise her a high dollar purse for a 4.0 that she got in high school and now a Rolex if she completes undergrad with a 4.0.
Im very blessed and both my kids work hard and have given me no trouble at all and will be better of financial than I am.
My goal was to have them appreciate what help I gave them and allow them to pursue and education that would pay off but not give them so much that it spoiled them.

re: Retirement Account Goals?

Posted by Ol boy on 8/18/26 at 9:20 am to
I had set out to have 3m by 55 with the intention of retiring then. I’m 50 and sitting at 2.4 but have really changed my outlook on retirement. I love what I do and have plenty of time to enjoy life outside of work and have started spending more money on things with the family (nice vacations hunting trips and and plan to help them financially)
Both my kids are doing good and will be better off financially than I am so I’m planning to enjoy some of the money with them now instead of waiting to leave it to them or being to old to enjoy it.
One of the biggest changes was I saw several friends work till retirement and and die right after or before, I decided on a more balanced approach and really started focusing on my health and have made a 100% improvement the last 3yrs. I joke that I was on pace to have enough money to live to 99 but my health had me checking out at 65!!
Don’t be afraid to pivot, life changes!!

I bought one last month at interstate guns in Hammond. It took 7 or 8 days including the wknd and I have no complaints with using them.

Been doing my own for over 30 yrs and thinking about trying it out for a semi-retirement idea.

Everyone I know who has started out doing it and were good and fair priced had more work than they wanted.
Are you willing to give up your hunting season? I want to retire to hunt more not less! I’m going to look for a retirement job that is summer only lol.
I had an issue with a AR upper several years back that I ordered and was given every single excuse and different stories from different people over a period of like 2mts. ~350$ was not gonna be enough money to get a lawyer involved so I contacted the better business bureau and the state attorney general’s office.
All the supply chain/cerakote booth/workforce issue they had been experiencing were resolved and I got my upper with a discount within 3-5 days!

other than the tinnitus

I had a sudden urge to yawn real wide and pop my ears!!!
I finally broke down and bought a suppressor a couple of weeks ago.
550$ I stuck it on a 16in barrel 308 and it will probably be my 90% of my deer hunting hunting gun.
Ton of good suggestions and they will all kill deer. Just keep in mind our next president will probably be a democrat and we are one school shooting away from a mass run on ammo. Of all the ones mentioned during the pandemic and mass ammo runs you could reliably find ammo for was the 308. He’ll even my 30-30 was getting to the point that I wouldn’t shoot pigs or coyotes with it lol.
A mild 308 not even reduced recoil will be inline with 7mm08.
If I was on a budget I would rather have a 500 rifle and a 500$ suppressor than a 1000k$ rifle and that’s for all calibers.
Last couple years have been good. Several years before that they were hit and miss but the owner was not plugged in and they had work release workers working it “ so I was told “
I know you didn’t ask but the same gen area has full rut meat shop , never heard of had a negative experience or carters old supermarket which is the guy who was at romero’s in central and another top notch for the area processor.
Another vote for the trijicon Huron.
I had some bass pro gift cards I cashed in for a 3-12x40 30mm tube with a bdc reticle I have not mounted it yet but edge to edge clarity and eye relief looks good.
For most whitetail hunting I have decided that turrents is not happening. I plan to zero and verify my hash marks and shoot accordingly. A rut crazed whitetail is not going to let you range him then dial and shoot.

re: Deer skinning knife

Since you are asking to spend 200$ I assume you are wanting a mid level to higher end knife and not a disposable or budget knife.
The benchmades are nice just keep in mind that super steels will be harder to sharpen and if you don’t have the right sticks or stones you will be disappointed.
I have a boker arbilito that I have had since HS and it’s cleaned probably 50 deer. Great steel great profile but handle was kind of small for my paw.
Decided to use it somewhat as a patterned and modified the handle and made 10 different slightly different carbon steel knives and used them and gave the ones i didn’t love as gifts.
My conclusion is 3.25 to 3.75 is the right size blade. And my favorite shape is almost exactly what the front of an outdoor edge replaced blade knife is.
I treated myself to a Montana knife company whitetail knife, overpriced maybe but feels great in the hand and hopefully I can test it out Oct 1

The Garmin will do what you want.
I have an instinct 3 and have debated on buying a higher end model for more features (touch screen store music) but love the battery life 20+ days if not using GPS.

I have a Springfield operator just like the green grip one that bama beer posted.
It shoots awesome and just feels great in the hand, it has a holosun red dot and it legit shoots beer can groups at 20yd and I’m not John wick!
I have shot probably 250-500rd and it hasn’t hick-up once.
5m 11:30 pace average hr 130.
It was nice to just run and not have any plan or goal or agenda. Just me the birds squirrels and a podcast.

re: Deer Trough Height

Posted by Ol boy on 8/5/26 at 8:21 pm to

Old man at our lease said we had to “build them pecker high “ this one is pecker high and had only one pic of a pig in it ever.
Salty britches anti chafing all over potential hot spots before any long runs.
1m 10:00
First run since last Saturday 50miler and legs felt good. Trying to decide if I want to find a race to run this fall or just maintain till La marathon and R2R Grand Canyon 2027.

Damn baw, you tryna win season 13 of Alone?

lol like I said if farther than 1 mile, although I find myself throwing that bag into my pack for all types of activities. Almost every item except fire starter gets used all the time as some some sort of make do repair. I forget I have 5-6 small zip ties and some no sew patches in there as well.
I didn’t win season 13 of alone but I did win the fastest to burn a string 1ft of the ground using only one match in a church group called royal rangers when I was 12 or 13!!

If I intend on being farther than 1mile from a buggy or truck/road I will pack.
20ft of para cord
Small lighter with duck tape wrapped around it
Water proof matches with case and duck tape around it.
Some quick clot
Some flagging and paper towels
Water purification tabs
Contractor trash bag
Spare batteries for my headlamp
Some fire starter
Multi tool
Small medicine bottle with some pain killers
It all fits in a small ditty bag that’s about the size of a Nalgene bottle.
And with it I can pretty much turn what would be a miserable night into not so miserable.
Get a Garmin watch it has a compass and you can use it for backup navigation with the gps .
Thanks.
Yeah that heat was brutal, I called the race director for a runner who was broke down by the river and couldn’t even stand. I felt bad leaving him but there was no way I was gonna carry him out. They ended up getting him with a buggy. I chatted with a guy running the 50k and he had only run a half before that race and several of his army buddies had all signed up for the 50m and never ran more than 15-20m according to him. He said most of them dropped to the 50k distance lol.
My HR walking was 130s mid day, I may run another 50m but it probably wont be that one just because of the heat. I did the 50k there last year and like the course and vibe.
