You people are vastly underestimating the speed of a bear.
You also better have shite in ur pants or blood in ur face if you shoot one. Wildlife and fisheries up there are very peculiar about it
And black bear charges mean he most likely isn’t stopping

But ever try to take a close range shot with a rifle.
Yes. It's easy. I know some of y'all practice with your pistols more than me, but rifles are far far easier for me to hit shite with at any range. I can hit a deer at stupidly close range with a rifle. Done it more than once.

Simply Rugged makes a chest harness system for a holster. Don't know if they still make it, but Uncle Mike's used to make an inexpensive shoulder holster and a bandolier holster. Whatever I'd think the holster should ride very snugly. I'd also suggest a retention strap.

Waste of time. If it’s Griz, you better have claw marks on you before you shoot. If a black, it most likely won’t attack.
Plenty of places to hunt that don’t have griz.

Don't black bears kill more people than any other species?

Black bears have only killed 61 people across North America since 1900, brown bears (grizzleys) killed 69 people in the same time period. The chances of being killed by a domestic dog, bees, or lightning are vastly greater, the chances of being murdered by someone are 60,000 times greater. One of the safest places a person can be is in the woods.

As to your question on how to carry a handgun hunting in Montana bear country..... I would suggest in your hand providing your rifle is set up with a high power scope for long range.
My daughter & I saw a black bear in Ocala Nat. Forest. When I witnessed how fast that thing could move. I knew right then I could not draw on a bear providing it had me set up for ambush. Be careful enjoy yourself.

As said, how often will you have neither gun in your hand? Will you be carrying your rifle most of the time or on a sling or will it be on your backpack? I understand you may prefer a handgun but if you are carrying your rifle there is no reason to drop it and pick up your handgun for a charging bear. So I'd consider a place for your handgun you wouldn't need to 'draw' it from.
Then, if you go walking through thick 'bear' areas you can grab your pistol.
The amount of times a bear charges out of no where without seeing it first is extremely extremely rare. A good percentage of bear charges are when the bear is scene first. My point is chances are it won't happen and chances are if it does you will have plenty of time to have your weapon drawn and aimed before the bear actually charges.
Lastly, if you are hunting in a group consider that. You aren't a seal team, it's likely not necessary to have everyone armed heavily. Plan to have one person with a gun out and call it a day. Maybe consider one rifle and one pump shotgun. Switch off days.

If you really want to carry a pistol just scrap the coveralls?

Depends on the weather. Last year it was snowing while they were there.
My rifle will be attached to my daypack. Also don’t care if anyone else has a handgun. We will be in group of 2-3 at any given times. I want one for piece of mind. I know I won’t have much of a chance if a bear charges. I’m not unrealistic. But I have a better chance than the guy without a gun.

You're going to regret coveralls. You need to look into wool pants and sweaters. Been there twice. You'll be soaking wet from sweat, snow, or rain. You need something that is light, quiet, and stays warm when wet. Most of the guides I've seen keep a piston in a holster on their chest. Usually under their top jacket. Something like this

Agree that you will regret coveralls. Hot, heavy, poor flexibility for changing conditions. Great for sitting in a blind all day, bad for moving in the mountains.
Bear spray > pistol but nut shot is your best bet.

OP, are you in griz country or not? If the area only has black bears, there is little reason for concern. I hunt with a high population of black bears all the time and have no problems. A bear will be afraid of two or three of you together.
Agree with others, drop the coveralls.

We’re gonna be near Lewistown. More central. Grizzlies are more to the west of us. Appreciate everyone’s feedback and suggestions. Still bringing the handgun. Was just looking for carry suggestions.

Reminds me of a story about a fellow going camping in Alaska, he makes his last stop at a general store to get the last few things on his list and he gets nervous and asks the shop keeper about a 44 mag pistol in the counter, the shopkeeper tells him that he is running a special on that handgun and if he buys it today he will file down the front sight for free. The camper thinks for a minute and said, yeah that will be great if a bear charges and I don’t have time to aim it would be eaiser to point and shoot without the front sight, the shopkeeper laughs and says no, the reason you want the sight filed down is so it won’t hurt as much when that bear takes the pistol from you and shoves it up your arse.
To the OP, be comfortable, bring a pistol for peace of mind
