How to carry a handgun while hunting in Montana?

I’m going mule deer hunting in November. Never been before. I plan to be wearing coveralls and will have a daypack plus my rifle. I want to carry my 10mm while there. I’m not looking to conceal carry but don’t know what would be the most comfortable way to carry outside my coveralls. I was debating a dropleg rig. Never used something like this before. Any suggestions?

I'd either just use a basic outside the waist band hip holster with some sort of retention or I'd do a cross chest holster lime this... Kenai
Drop leg holsters are good, but if youre wearing coveralls I feel like you wouldn't be able to get it tight enough and it would probably just flop around. You really need to get them up high so the don't move.

Why do you need to carry a 10mm pistol when mule deer hunting in Montana? Did your guide recommend it? It seems like extra weight and hassle.

I used to wear coveralls when cruising timber in thick briars. Never found a good way to carry while also carrying a Camelback, clipboard, notepad, etc. Tried multiple setups, but couldn't get anything to work well.
Leg holster chafed. Shoulder holster slung around and tipped over. Left-handed Level 1 in the pocket was the closest thing to working, but it would tip out of my pocket when I bent down. I just gave up, and didn't carry when I wore coveralls. This was with a G20

No guide. This will be my buddies 3rd trip in as many seasons. They ran into a bear last year that ate a deer they shot. I’ll try to get pics later. 3 of us are going up a couple days early and camping. Rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

That kenai look really good but will be in the way of the binos on a shoulder harness

Is 10mm big enough medicine to stop a grizzly at close range?

10mm has as much or more (depending on ammo) kinetic energy compared to a .357 magnum, and it's semi auto.
.357 is the "bear" minimum many agree you need to have a chance.
If you're proficient and can make reliable follow ups, a .44 magnum is more likely to crack a bear skull and less apt to deflect, but you better not miss.

With 15+1 in a Glock 20, you'd be able to do some significant damage to a bear

Your not going to get 15 more tries.

Are you planning on using a backpack? I’ve used my backpack hipbelt and clipped a Blackhawk paddle holster on it. My pack has a wide hipbelt and was very comfortable way to carry. I was just carrying a 9mm so most likely lighter than what you may have.
It did make the hipbelt pocket useless though.

I don't understand why you would want a handgun since you are already carrying a rifle. If you are that concerned about bears then get a can of bear spray. Here is a pretty good video from Randy Newberg who spends a lot of time in grizzly country each year. LINK

I agree. I will have a rifle. But ever try to take a close range shot with a rifle. I have and completely missed a deer I tried to put down. Maybe you’re a better marksmin than me. I’m just gonna be prepared with my rifle, 10 rds of 10mm, and bear spray. Why not have the handgun? It’s a lb or so loaded? I just want to be prepared. Most likely won’t need it. And y’all will get to read my report about the hunt.
My pack does have a waist belt. I didn’t think of that. Appreciate the input.

If you have a rifle, what do you need a weakass pistol for??

Yes
In fact, handguns have gotten a bad rap when it comes to personal defense in bear country. A guy killed a charging brown bear on the Kenai Pen. a couple of years ago with a 10mm

Why would you ever want to camp out when your friends saw what a bear did to a huge mule deer in one night? Lol.
I’ll bring donuts when I meet you in the am for the hunts. That is, if you don’t become a bear soft taco in your sleeping bag.

More does sound better. Then I saw a bear can travel 50’ in a second. How close is close enough for a 10mm? Maybe 60’ for a kill shot. Then you have one more second To pew pew.
If Roger vouches for the 10 then it must be good. He knows bears. I’ve seen a few from a distance
