I also don’t get hating on bronze/silver medals.
The United States has such a deep and diverse talent pool of athletes at its disposal (along with funding) to field competitive teams at the global level even in years where we don’t dominate. Sometimes even in sports where we’ve never historically dominated. There aren’t many nations that can boast that ability, and none with our track record since the fall of the USSR
I think that’s to be celebrated rather than disparaged, but I know, I know, inb4: “participation trophies,” “soft,” “if you ain’t first you’re last,” etc.

We have folks on this board that think a bronze medal is the equivalent of a tee ball participation trophy. Which is absolutely ludacris when you talk about people competing against the world in their respective sport.

Watching the Women's Rugby 7s team win Bronze was possibly (imo) more exciting than watching the gymnastics team lap the field on their way to Gold.

I'm curious how many medals each country would have if athletes had to register by which country they train in competitively.
Like if a Canadian actually went to school/college in the US and strictly trains for swimming in the US, they have to register with the US delegation.
Be interesting to see a medal distribution like that.

We dominate in the big sports towards the end of the Olympics.
We'll be fine snowflake.

People just think because the US is bigger and richer than country X they assume the US will do better and can’t compute how that doesn’t automatically equate to Gold. They seem lost on the idea on how many Olympic sports the US is barely competitive in.
It all depends on the sport. The Men’s gymnastics got their first medal in 16 years and the women’s rugby bronze was their first (and unexpected) medal since it was introduced in 2016.
Point being, not only is expecting gold in every sport ridiculous, the US is actually overachieving in some sports just to get on the podium.

Just out of the gate, Leon Marchand (France) is a Junior at Arizona State and trains with Bob Bowman (Michael Phelps coach). He's getting ready to become the French Michael Phelps.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn ran for the University of Kentucky (who has produced multiple Olympic female hurdlers in recent years) and was the second person in Puerto Rican history to win a Gold medal for PR.
That list would be insanely long.

The thing that gets me though, is that Puerto Ricans are Americans. Had a friend at LSU who swam in the Olympics in Seoul who swam for PR. Just missed qualifying for the US team that year but because he was born in Puerto Rico he could be on their team.
