overall medal leaders
why do we care of overall medals, shouldnt the criteria be most gold medals? If a team has 50 bronze medals, is it better than a team that has 30 gold and 15 silver?

Because they award them.

If you want to argue ricky bobby style that the olympics only awards gold, then you have a point.

Just took a look at the medal leaders. Japan is having a very strong Olympics. They don't have many silver or bronze, but they're killing it with gold.

Do they normally son this much at the Olympics, or did they do some frickery since they're hosting.

I'm not sure because I am mainly watching golf but I think it may be that they are good in the sports that started early - diving, etc.

Track and field just started recently.

I believe most medal tables are ranked in order of the number of gold's.

That being said, looking at the current table I would rate the Italian "team" stronger than the four countries above them.

Go Great Britain!

No, but host countries almost always increase their medal count from the previous Olympics. Japan is actually well behind their projected medal count for this Olympics, but still projected to have well over their '16 total. At this point, the ROC is outperforming projections by the most.
