World is more global than ever. The marginal advantage of the US training system is muted because anyone can get access to it and then represent a country not named the USA.

Feels like we are not winning nearly as many golds this year especially in swimming.

The only thing that we are doing great in is making excuses. See the other posts, every event.

We already have 14 golds. We are going to finish in the 30s with the most golds again. On par with just about every Olympics

Eh we have 59 total medals and 13 golds with track just starting. We are having an off Olympics in men’s swimming but track will make up for that. A few Olympics ago our track teams were a little bit down and we still finished with most golds and overall medals. The track program was revamped and the medals will pour in this Olympics making up for a lackluster swimming performance.

This. Swimming is down, especially the men. And “down” means 25 medals so far, but only 6 gold. Probably add a couple more medals tomorrow to wrap it up.

T&F looks to be better this cycle. Jamaica seems down a bit this cycle in the sprints (at least the women’s 100).

Though we had two really strong shot at gold that did not pan out already in T&F. But, frankly the mixed medley thing is stupid. But then again so are a bunch of events the Chinese dominate.

So all in all, seems ok but certainly not great.

I agree…”our down” would be a tremendous outing for most other countries. You know what they say about expectations and all that. This Olympics for men’s swimming reminds of when Usian Bolt and Jamaica was dominating and our men’s team was experiencing a bit of decline compared to previous Olympics. Our US track team bounced back and so will the men’s swimming team. People need to chill. Still going to be a great Olympics for the US

Something I have noticed this Olympics is we’re medaling in events we’ve had significant droughts in. And I believe we’ve had some first timers as well, like Moore medaling in the Triple Jump (first American woman to do so).

Not all are Gold. But some are still significant in raising the bar in events we haven’t always been competitive.

Had our first medal in the men’s 10,000m in years. It’s been fun to watch.

I think it's going to be hard to pass China. They have a lot of golds left in stuff like diving, ping pong, women's boxing, etc.

China pumps a ton of resources into targeting as many medals, especially gold, as they can. The US is more about showcasing star talent.

IYKYK

Supply is tight because UAE is using over 70% of the world's supply. This guy has about 92% lugworm DNA now.

I don’t think we are having a down year except that we don’t have the best male swimmer this go around.

From Biondi to Phelps to Lochte to Dressel + guys like Murphy, Adrian we’ve had the top male swimmer as long as I can remember until this Olympics.
