Someone has been paying property taxes for 62 years.
That is why I said the they should reduce taxes for those who have been paying taxes the longest, i.e., 65+

100% agree! It is BS. Like anything else when you buy it, you pay a tax and then that's it. That's the way it should be, not year after year after year.

I’m arguing semantics because semantics are what we currently use
to differentiate between the actual ability to own something (I’m defining as where you never have to pay a sum of money to someone else to maintain possession of it) versus not owning it (paying a recurring sum of money to an outside entity to continue possessing something).
When I buy a car, boat, plane, whatever else and pay the entirety of the asking price, unless I intentionally list that item as collateral for a loan, I own it outright.
Viewing property (land, house, buildings) as collateral to ensure I pay property taxes is essentially stating that property taxes are loan payments required for mw to continue using my paid for property.
It’s not rent. I know that. But saying that property is collateral to ensure you pay property taxes means that you do not actually own that property, the government does.

And I know they were not tyrannically imposed on the people by some dictator, but rather voted on and approved by a majority of voters. That still doesn’t change the fact that my house can’t be taken away from me for failing to pay a bill to a third party despite owning it.

The biggest issue is that the counties have been on spending sprees for the last 7 years. Florida has its own DOGE that is going to counties and cities looking for waste, fraud, and abuse. It is named FAFO... for real.

Yeah, with property taxes they got you on that one.
With cars, plenty of people just ignore all the car fees. You can get tickets and whatnot, but you have to get caught first. With delinquent property taxes, they find you pretty quickly.

What’s your state income tax? You don’t need to answer, I know it’s zero. California has crazy high state income tax. If you make $200k, you’re paying 9.3% tax rate. I lived in Texas for a long time. The property taxes are fair as long as there isn’t a state income tax.

It kind of is though. Income taxes are money taken out of your income, so you're always "coming out ahead". Sales taxes are largely optional..if you don't want to pay the sales tax, don't buy the thing.
Property taxes are neither of those things. They are just money you have to come up with every year...so always a net negative.
