I have lived in both.
The person who said that Memphis has great potential is absolutely right. I love the gritty feel of the city, Delta vibe, Craftsman architecture, downtown on the river, the history, etc. I much prefer Memphis to the condo-ized yuppie playground that Nashville has become.
I don't even mind Memphis for the typical reasons (crime, abandoned buildings, general sketchiness all around).
My main problem with the city is that it's just dead. When you go to see a touring band that would draw a crowd of 300 in New Orleans, you'd be lucky to have 15 people show up in Memphis. If you stop by a regular bar in Midtown on a Thursday night, there's a good chance you'll be one of five or less people there. Even the film series at the art museum (which showed some really cool stuff) stopped happening, due to what I'm assuming was low attendance (it certainly wasn't busy any time I was there). There's an effort to do the whole MIllennial "this is our city" thing, but it just feels too young and insubstantial. Memphis even only has like 6 breweries, four of which are total dogshit...any other city I can think of is packed to the gills with breweries in 2020.
One thing I couldn't stand about living in New Orleans was the number of transplants and the way that anytime you'd go out the first question would be "so where are you from?" and the way people would use their number of years in New Orleans like a badge of honor to wear. Otherwise, it beats Memphis in most categories (other than cost of living).

We’ve lived in Nola suburbs (Old Metairie), Nola downtown, Memphis downtown and now Memphis suburbs.
We’d never move back to Nola. Crime in Memphis is extremely isolated. The good areas are great, the bad areas are BAD, like real bad. Nola is sporadic, one street is good while one is bad.
Way lower cost of living in Memphis and no state income tax. Downtown is growing insanely, I can guarantee the posters speaking about Memphis being a shite hole haven’t been in the past 5 years. No clue on jobs outside of Tech, but our IT market is booming. I’ve also never seen more cops in my life than when we moved here. The good areas are HEAVILY patrolled. Housing is extremely cheap; the Overton square, midtown, Cooper-young area is booming and the Germantown/Collierville areas have some of the best public schools in the state. 5 hours from 4 National Parks.

Nola for all its warts has more to offer even business wise, I will say that housing stock is much less price wise. Problem with Memphis suburbs, is that you don't have a 24 mile barrier like you do in NOLA. Summers there can be brutal. August temps average about 100+ with humidity with no rain for a cool down. Memphis is invading Northern DeSoto County.

Best Memphis suburbs >>> Best NOLA suburbs
I'm sure Memphis gets some benefit from being in TN, but nothing about Memphis says TN. It just doesn't seem like it belongs in with the rest of the state. To think that Memphis is in the same state as Nashville is funny. To think that it is in the same state as Gatlinburg is insane.

also I thought the bbq was a little overhyped from the 3 or 4 places I tried. not bad, just nothing special
also beale street is similar to bourbon st in that you only have to be there about 20 minutes before you're sick of it. there's way better stuff away from there imho

I got married and have spent a lot of time in New Orleans; I love New Orleans. But, as a farmer, if I’m dreaming dreams and money is not an issue, I’d want to own land for farming and hunting somewhere along the MS River between Clarksdale-Walls and West Helena-Blytheville, and live on the bluff in Memphis overlooking a sunset on the river every afternoon.

You hit the nail on the head. Collierville and Germantown are pretty nice as far as suburbs go.
Memphis belongs in Mississippi.

Memphis is the Dollar Store generic of New Orleans. Only positive for Memphis is that no state income tax in TN.

I have lived in both. New Orleans by a mile if for the food alone.
However, "the haves vs the have not's" in Memphis is off the chain which is probably why an earlier poster said the suburbs* where better in Memphis.
