Midtown/Cooper-Young area. Quite a few 100+ year old historically registered homes and a ton of high $ incomes in the area. Walk to all the bars/restaurants without the worry of being shot/mugged.

Memphis is a complete dump without the redeeming qualities new orleans has.

Been to both multiple times. Nola has my family but I’d still take Nola even if that wasn’t a factor. Love that Memphis BBQ but the rest of the city is straight up depressing. Nola you at least have a lot of stuff to do, such as the saints, zoo and aquarium, WW2 museum, etc. And you still have great food. Also, Bourbon >>>>> Beale.

But... both are better than St Louis. Talk about a dump.

Memphis has a very good zoo. Been to Memphis many times and have a lot of friends there. Live in NOLA and love where I live. So, NOLA is my answer.

Memphis is my childhood home, and New Orleans is my favorite place to visit for a weekend. So basically I am not afraid of black people, so that isn’t going to sway me too much one way or the other.

This is a difficult question. I love New Orleans, primarily for the food. The entertainment is great as well. Now if we’re talking about living in the city limits? I just feel like I would get tired of all the bullshite with NOLA, as in the drunks everywhere all the time out of control. I’ve kinda moved past the point of my life of wanting to do that all the time.

If you asked me this 10-15 years ago the answer would be NOLA with no hesitation. Memphis in the 90s was hopeless, a ghost town too dangerous to even step foot downtown. You have to put this in perspective of someone who has spent my whole life here, but what has happened in the past 10 years, and especially 5 years is nothing short of a miracle. There are parts of the city (like Binghamton) that used to look like Mogadishu but are now thriving with white yuppies and gentrification. This is happening in lots of areas around town.

This might not be accurate, but I feel like New Orleans just gets worse every time I visit and is being managed more poorly, which is saying a lot. And of course there is the constant threat of catastrophic natural disaster which can’t be ignored.

I’d much rather hang out in New Orleans but I’m gonna have to go with Memphis to live. As others have mentioned the suburbs are better, and if you like the outdoors you can easily get away, buy cheap AF land within reasonable distance. My family has 300 acres in Marshall County, MS and it is 45 mins from Memphis. All the hunting and fishing you could ever want. New Orleans seems to be more difficult to escape to get somewhere truly remote and not in a swamp or by a refinery.

Memphis is no jewel but it is becoming an actual decent place and I hope it remains under the radar because Nashville fricking sucks.

Willie Herenton was the Memphis Mayor for 18 years and it was absolutely awful for the city. The entire city got Section 8’d to hell and back, pushing most of the tax base into the suburbs. Then the city/county school systems were merged, which forced people out of the metro entirely. Place has not recovered.

Downtown was dangerous but Hickory Hill, Raleigh, and Frayser were all still nice places to live. Before you had crime concentrated in one area of the city, now it is everywhere. Along with bullet casings, hair weaves, and empty bags of flamin hot Cheetos.

Most cities, even Dem run cities, were smart enough not to Section 8 TOO much real estate. Here ton and his crew really and truly hated whitey, and did it out of spite.
