Nola is a better spot to visit.

Having lived in both...neither. 
One thing TN did NOT have that gives it an edge, or at least used to, been a long time...no state income tax except for bonds, stocks, interest from loans.

The tipping point would be that I’d probably have to associate with people from Marion and West Memphis.
Something weird about those folks, I couldn’t put a finger on it, but a no go.
Rendezvous BBQ was overrated, as well. I know, I should have gone to someplace else, blah, blah, blah.... but it seemed popular, and was in the heart of the city

I lived in Memphis for six years. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Very different experience from NOLA but at least the city has roads that are operable.

I'd rather live in Nashville, Chattanooga or Knoxville over Memphis in terms of other cities in the state of TN fwiw.
