You act like there is no precedent of divorce courts getting tied up with inherited property disposition desputes. Especially with it potentionally only taking a single careless error to convert it to community property.

Prenups can helps quantify and solidify arguments for defining status, making it more difficult to fight in court.

Nope.

I've never understood why people get so angry about prenups.

This saves everyone a lot of trouble having to not pretend you are an equal to the blood family members if you end up working at said business. She may love you with all her heart but the rest of the fam has the real world to worry about and can't be bothered if you two separate.

Sounds like he over-estimates the value of his pressure washing and landscape business. Tell him to frick off for doing it in front of the family and tell her to frick off for not being grown-up enough to talk to you about it.

Sounds like something that Bob Vance of Vance Refrigeration would do to his future son in law

Punch him out. That should well-establish where things stand.

I'd have probably laughed in my FIL's face if he pulled that stunt.

Good thing my wife's family isn't POS trash so we don't have to worry about that.

I can understand not wanting the family business to go to an in law, but if my wife is receiving income from her job, or from a business she owns, etc, that's my money too. Part of marriage. Don't get married if that's not agreeable imo.

Don't know much about prenups but wouldn't the prenup protect the husband in case she (her business) got sued?

In MS/TN you would have to have no living spouse, children, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles, or any living descendants of those listed before it would pass to the state

Yes. She would have a very quick decision to make...

I don’t think so.

What protects that is the LLC status of the business.

However if the spouse is somehow held accountable for a debt, that is shared equally between the two.

No, I wouldn’t because I have my own money. I’d just smile and tell him that I’ll sign whatever he wants me to because we aren’t getting a divorce. If you can’t say that then you shouldn’t be getting married.

Business stuff should be worked out prior to a wedding. A lot of people ignore this because of “love,” but those people are stupid because if you really are in love then there’s no reason to worry about any financial agreements that are signed.

Jews have a very good system for this. The father of the bride speaks with the husband and works out a settlement prior to the wedding - should the couple ever be divorced.

Pretending there aren’t financial implications that accompany marriage, doesn’t make it true and it doesn’t make your marriage better.

Plot twist, I’m going to be the guy asking for a pre-nup at a bbq this weekend for my daughter’s soon to be husband. Appreciate the insights. I’m doing it in front of the family because I don’t want anyone to say I didn’t protect the family’s interests if this marriage goes south.
