i'm dying to get the frick out of the new orleans area and move to somewhere like lafayette. i'll never get my wife to leave LA totally.
1) I'll sell you my nice house in Lafayette and you move here.
2) I retire to Arkansas, Missouri or Tennessee with a cabin in the woods.
3) We screw the real estate agent out of a unneeded commission.
Win Win Win

I’ve been fed up since 2005, just waiting on the husband to catch up…

6 more years until my stepsons are out of the house then we’re hauling arse. Even our football teams suck now and the party scene hasn’t mattered to me in a long time. I can get good food elsewhere where I don’t have to deal with the Walmart/ebt crowd everywhere I go.

Mine is at the "kinda fed up" stage but only because she has been up in Memphis for training and will be working out of there (4 days on / 4 off). If I were at retirement age or could transfer up there (Germantown area), I would in a fricking heartbeat. The drivers are a bit crazier but their "bad" traffic days are nothing compared to the Baton Rouge average (hell, not even compared to the LA 1 average between Plaquemine and the Intracoastal).

I think I'd like Montana and Wyoming except the long arse winters would be a no go.

Your username and Wyoming fit. When I think cowboy I think those Wyoming and Montana, not Texas or anywhere else.

Louisiana is a shithole. Unless your entire life is fishing or hunting and drinking shitty beer in a run down camp while making $75k per year at the plant, there is nothing to back your claim that moving to a different state doesn't provide a much higher quality of life.
That's accurate. I guess moving to east Texas would be ideal so you're close enough to La. to come enjoy the hunting and fishing.
I would like to move farther from the coast so we wouldn't have to worry about hurricanes anymore.

The cost of college for your children should be in your decision making.
Tuition costs are tied to state of residency and if you have any guess as to where kids want to go, check instate vs. out of state.
Also, there are the smaller colleges that give good educations that aren't money pits. I know several groups of those colleges and if you are an employee, your child's tuition to any of them is greatly reduced.
Then there are the states whose lottery money subsidizes college for in state students.
When you get serious in your long term planning, this might help decision making.

Escape from LA is on the 5 year plan. Wife has had it... she's lived here for 40 years....As soon as our son graduates high school. we are likely putting the properties on the market and will be outta here.

I live on land that’s been in the family since before the Civil War. I’ve always said I would die here. As I’ve grown older and wiser, I’ve realized that when I retire I’ll be ready to sell and move to Tennessee or something. The ancestors will just have to spin in their graves.

Shocked at the number of people here that would move north but are scared off by cold weather and snow. Winter is not that big of a deal. In fact, a change in seasons is kind of nice and there are outdoor winter activities that some of you might like. Upper Midwest is a fantastic place.
