We were sitting on the patio just listening to music and having a cocktail. She just blurts out, “I’m not doing this every year. I will not retire here. I want to leave.” She has lived here all her life.
This after we had spent some time planning for a major remodel (before the storm). Only 5 years left on our mortgage, and I’m looking at 9 years to retirement. We had pretty bad roof damage from Ida, and I suspect I’ll be getting a new roof out of it, and maybe some new floors in the kitchen.
Anybody else dealing with a spouse who is fed up? She clearly has PTSD from repeated storms, repeated insurance claims, repeated repairs, etc.

I'm fed up, but I don't think my spouse is quite yet.
I cannot wait to leave Louisiana. The second she's ready to go, I will run and not look back.
This entire state is awful.

Move before she inevitably changes her mind.

If weren’t for family we’d be gone already.

Visited Florida last weekend and it really opened my eyes.
As soon as I can get out of Baton Rouge, I’m out.

This is why everyone stays here. You stay for family, especially elderly. Then they die and you become the elderly you stayed in order to be near, and the cycle continues.
There is absolutely no reason to live in Louisiana outside of staying near family, which is the only reason everyone with the means to do so doesn't abandon this state.

Rip the bandaid off before my kids get stuck here too

Strike now if you want to leave. In a year, she'll change her mind.

Mine has a different choice, I retire in 15 months I'm headed to the mountains with or wo her.

It’s a complex issue, but when you look at all manner of natural disasters, and also consider other desirability living factors, the number of “safe” places isn’t as large as one may think.

Plenty of hurricanes in Florida though much better place to live otherwise
If I ever moved it would be AZ, UT, MT, WY, ID

I'm sorry your life sucks and that in your eyes crossing an imaginary line makes it better.

I wonder if the veil will ever be pulled back on Louisiana's State Government. Can you imagine the decades of corruption that at some point just became the norm. That deal where the new guy walks in and they go look I know it seems wrong but that's just how we do it down here.

At least she's telling you now.
My parents are retired, just did a major remodel, and my mom is ready to go.
And I don't blame her one bit.

The retirement part sucks... unless you can do your job remotely.
Then, GTFO.

Wife and I are both open to leaving, and having the same conversations currently. It seems like a boring exercise, but make a list of pro's and con's.
Why do you want to leave?
Why do you want to stay?
Where the hell are we going to move?
We're considering N Carolina, Savannah, Houston, Fort Worth, Charleston, maybe Tennessee, maybe Colorado. It will be tough to make new friends, but I figure that's what the kids are for, and the addition of nice weather and nature activities is a big plus... Lots of people in Louisiana having the same thoughts. You're in a good spot if you have the means to decide to leave.

It's part of it. It sucks. But where do you go? To the West with wildfires? To the East with hurricanes and flooding?
To the mid country where there are tornadoes?
Or to the north where you will fight winter snow every year guaranteed? I'm curious to hear an answer to these questions for myself really.
