We live in Copiah County, Ms. 150+/0- miles inland a few hundred feet above sea level. Hurricane threats are minimal, no flooding. Tornadoes sometimes, schools are okay. 30+/- miles from Jackson, (shite hole). We really like it, been here 20 years and not moving. You can be in Hammond in less than 2 hours to visit.

I want to leave but I have a dental practice here that it would be hard to sell for a great price and would be even harder to lose the autonomy of being my own boss. Additionally, have family here. Those 2 things not in the picture, I’d be gone

Baton Rouge isn’t the Baton Rouge of the 70’s or 80’s.
Yep. Crime is lower now.

It's extremely easy to avoid forest fires.

This ties into the "men aren't going to college and should go to trade school" thread. If you don't go to college and pick up a trade, you are most likely learning that trade locally, then using local contacts to enhance your career or build your own business. Which means: you are staying in LA. If you want your kids to escape what you deem an inferior state and life style, focus on their academics and send them out of state for college.

This is why everyone stays here. You stay for family, especially elderly. Then they die and you become the elderly you stayed in order to be near, and the cycle continues.

There is absolutely no reason to live in Louisiana outside of staying near family, which is the only reason everyone with the means to do so doesn't abandon this state.

I make this very same statement almost verbatim all of the time.

This. If my family wanted to move to The Woodlands tomorrow I'd be gone! The current politics and policies have ruined this state presently and for a good ways into the future.

A friend of mine had a thriving dental practice in CA. She was also tired of the crazy shite and wanted out. She scoped out where she wanted to move to then took out a loan and opened a 2nd office in TX. With so many companies flooding into TX the last few years, there were more than enough new patients looking for a good dentist. She operated both traveling between offices until she built up her business at her 2nd location, then she shut her CA office and the rest is history. BTW, her TX office is way more successful and profitable.

You must have some data on assaults or robberies you're referring to? Because BR has been shattering all time murder rates the past few years and 2021 will be higher.

Louisiana's murder rate peaked in the mid 90s... not sure about Baton Rouge specific. Looks like most violent crime rates peaked in the mid 90s.

I wish I could find the data for Baton Rouge specifically, but nothing seems to go back that far.

Louisiana Crime Rates 1960 - 2019

ETA: That also doesn't include 2020 which was EBR's murderiest year on record.

Curious here. All the people that are ready to leave, what towns/cities do you live?

There is a difference between being able to choose where you live from the start vs moving an established life.
My whole family, my wife’s whole family and the large majority of our friends are all here (NOLA metro). I don’t see us leaving anytime soon as family is probably the most important thing to us. But I would love to retire somewhere else when my kids leave for college. Just not north of Tennessee because I absolutely hate cold weather. I’d take that Florida heat over a cold winter any day.

I will be 56 next month. I have marked 65 as the drop dead age for retirement. I’ll go earlier if I can make the dollaz work.

I am starting to conclude that I can live a more pared-down lifestyle somewhere else. 62 might be realistic.

Even if I didn’t have storm damage I’d want to leave. Move anywhere else and you won’t regret it.
