Why does Gen Z want to work in the dark?

Every single young person we have hired in the last 2 years works with the fluorescent lights off and only by the light coming in through the window. When I ask them why, every single one of them says "I prefer natural light."
They also wear earbuds while working. Something that made one of my now-retired partners absolutely batshit crazy.
I'm not trying to start another thread bashing Gen Z. But damn they have some weird proclivities. Such as disappearing at 5pm sharp.

Why do you want blinding bright white lighting? IMO people only do that because they've been conditioned to do it.
Give me a window with natural light and supplement it with yellow white accent lamps when its cloudy or getting dark.

Artificial light causes strain on your eyers.

Because office fluorescent lighting is soul suckingly awful. It literally hums. But get some lamps instead.

Our offices with this off light that directs up. I felt like I was working in a bar. I put the lamps back in his office and told him I prefer the office lighting. I do wish I had a window though.

I'm millennial but I do this.
Bright lights are unnecessary and annoying, tiring on the eyes, and I work better when I'm relaxed.
Sometimes I wear an ear bud in one ear with a some soft music on so I don't have to hear the dumb watercooler conversations outside my office or the Office Space "corporate accounts payable, this is Nina speaking, JUST A MOMENT" type repetitive responses.
Thankfully, I don't have to answer to anyone

I've never understood the old school mentality of arriving at 7:30 and leaving at 5:30 for a 9-5 job (unless you are playing catch-up or unusual circumstances). These older folks take it as a badge of honor, yet are the most inefficient workers I've ever seen. Congrats on drinking coffee and talking all day without accomplishing much. They must hate their home life.

I also prefer natural light. I have two big windows in my small office at home that has gives plenty of natural light without turning the lights on.

Half or more of the fluorescent lights in my office have been burned out for years.
It’s a constant battle with the maintenance people to keep them from replacing them.
Half the ceiling lights with window light is just about right.
As others have said, fluorescent lights is soul suckingly unpleasant. It’s not a Gen X thing.

It's not an either/or situation. Get your work done. But you don't turn into Cinderella at 5 p.m. Leave at 4 if you can. Work until 6 if needed.
Burning rubber in the parking lot at 5 p.m. regardless is the issue.

I'm asking this question out of pure ignorance here, but I thought it was "bad" for your eyes to look at screens while in darkness?
I assumed having the overhead lights off while at the computer would be worse on the eyes than being in a room with the lights on but from previous replies it sounds like that's not accurate.

Agree with that for the most part. I worked with two older guys who are now retired. One arrived at 6am every morning for an office job. He was a member of Senior Management, but still. The other guy would come in on holidays to be able to say that he did. Neither produced very much work.

I’m old as dirt and I prefer natural light, earbuds all day and out the door at 5:00.
