re: Why does Gen Z want to work in the dark?

Been doing that since my first office job 30 years ago. Leave lights off at home.
It’s even worse now with shitty LED lighting.

This is debated nearly every year at my firm and the only thing I can think of that is hard to replicate in terms of experience is having the young associate on a call in the same room as the partner so he or she can learn during “shadow time” while no one knows he or she is on the phone.

In my mind, this is remediable by simply saying, “Hey, I have my associate on the Teams call. He’s going to be taking notes and learning.” And just being upfront about it. As far as I know, there’s no easy way to have the associate mask his or her presence on a Teams call without being in the room physically.

That’s it. That’s the only “training” that cannot be done over Teams.

In fact, I have had more meaningful conversations and training with partners over Teams at my current firm (and I’ve given more training over Teams at my current firm) than my previous two firms. It is intentionality, not proximity. Senior level folks simply need to be willing to make themselves available to their subordinates.

This may only be relevant to law firms, but I doubt it.

Now, replacing socialization and team bonding? That’s a different story. That requires specific intention to have teams do group meetings, go out together, etc., when remote. Not impossible but not as organic as, “Hey, you wanna grab lunch?”

But, again, my prior two firms were not willing to do that. Everyone ordered door dash and worked through lunch, doors closed, heads in computers.

I don't do this but my wife does. Hers are noise cancelling, though, so I get it. She's not even listening to anything on them but she works from home and doesn't want the outside noises, the dogs, etc to distract her

one of our partners did this and he wasn't even young. He just like working with the lights off, and we all thought it was weird. Me personally, I hate overhead lights and fluorescent lights in general. I prefer lamp lighting when I'm in a room.
