I think you hit all the boomer talking points except remote work and taking leave.

What a weird thing to get upset about unless it's affecting productivity.

Not giving a frick is kind of cool when you get down to it. I hate to break it to people, but being able to just deal with stuff like what kind of light there is because you're focused on reaching goals is what's up. I guarantee they're not more productive due to the natural light.

It's all internet viral "thinking."

Minus the earbud part I can identify. I hate fluorescent light and am out the door as soon as I finish the day. I’m 58 btw.

Speak for yourself.

“Butts in seats” law firms are the worst. Tasks complete and billables met? Who gives a shite when or where it happens outside of client meetings, depositions, and court proceedings?

There’s a reason all your associates leave once they’re trained enough to be marketable elsewhere.

Probably because you're not very important and wont ever be.
The oldsters I know working that hard are usually well paid and pretty essential to to the business. The oldsters who work with the ethic you described never progressed much beyond their original position. They also tend to be the first to be let go.

I prefer working in natural light. When it gets too dark I turn on my lamp with a soft yellow light. I do put in ear buds from time to time but I only put one in my ear, so I can hear if someone needs me.

Trying to get someone's attention when there "locked in" is annoying.

Every single young person we have hired in the last 2 years works with the fluorescent lights off and only by the light coming in through the window.

One of the guys I work with does this. He's almost 70.

Maybe someone should explain how modern technology works. Most new earbuds now will let you listen to whatever you want, and the second someone starts talking to you, the music turns down so you can hear them.

Its not like youre just listening to music ignoring everything else happening.

I think butts in seats is essential when first starting out. After that, it’s a person by person thing. Working from home is a skill, not a perk, and not everyone has that skill.

I learned to quit trying to talk work habits of leaders on this board years ago.

99% of people will do the minimum and then wonder why they get left behind in their careers.

1% of people will do more than required.

Don’t even try to explain to the other 99 the difference in the 1%, they’ll never get it.

My personal experience is that most times what is praised as a strong work ethic is simply inefficiency rebranded and worn as a badge of honor. I manage a large team and the people that are most essential are those that don't often need extra hours to manage their responsibilities.

Now, there are a few true dedicated folks that can stay zeroed in on task for large amounts of time. But usually it's just low-trust micromanagers looking over their staff's shoulders all day and then spending those extra hours to take care of their actual responsibilities. It's real easy to look essential to a business when you simply don't let others make decisions and work to their full capability.

Ironically I think it’s you that doesn’t get it.

I’m not giving full effort to someone else for a paycheck. Ever. I’m capable enough that if I’m giving full effort, I’m taking all the money. I’m not climbing a ladder at someone else’s legacy.

The thought that people should give 100% effort at a workplace is bananas. You’re buying my time x my skill. You’re not buying my effort. You get my baseline. You can’t afford my effort. It’s worth too much.

You should definitely bring this to an interview or your next performance review. Great perspective.
