I'm sure that partner was annoyed as hell that he had to ask people stuff multiple times because of the ear buds. And this isn't an assessment of the partner, but I am willing to bet that his age demographic is the one that drove people to wearing ear buds. The one's I've had to deal with are the "ask for help" type. Don't figure shite out, just annoy the guy next to you to solve every little problem you have. That's why most people wear visible ear buds. They want you to know that they don't want you bothering them. Now, if you're the boss, that's different.

thats because the job isnt done and they depend on big bonuses so they work more to make sure those happen

I only turn the light on in my office if I'm looking at drawings. If I'm in excel I have the lights off and earbuds in. I'm a millennial.
I disappear at 3:30 pm. I stay late if needed to finish a project but that's rare. I'm salaried and as long as I'm caught up I don't sweat how my hours my arse is in my chair. If I'm needed my phone is in my pocket.

Proven that fluorescent light is hard on the eyes and generally shitty to work in.
Earbuds are to keep them focused because the work they do for you is boring as shite and they need constant stimulus.
Leaving at 5pm sharp because they have discovered their corporate overlords don’t give a single frick about them and staying to improve the company’s bottom line is not worth it to them for a glimmer of a hope that they get a raise or promotion instead of being able to go home and be with friends or family or rub one out.
They are all getting canned by AI apparently anyway, so they figure what’s the point?

I'm Gen X, can't stand the miserable fluorescent lights and use earbuds so I can't hear all the people yapping around me. Which by the way, whoever popularized the "open office" concept can go frick themselves.
Also leaving at 5:00? Screw them for not committing the best years of their lives to a shitty office environment and company that'll kick them to the curb the first moment that a balance sheet shows that profits might be slim.

I rarely turn on the overhead lights at home or in the office. Natural lights, and lamps with warm light bulbs.

The OP didn’t mention what field he was in.
And even so, it’s up to the A) firm to hire people who understand this and are willing to work like this and B) Old fart veterans like the OP to reinforce that as the workplace standard.
If neither of these are happening, then the OP is complaining about a standard that isn’t real.

As a lawyer myself, I fricking hate this mentality.
Often, I would go home and crack my laptop open again anyway because lawyers are on call all day long.
If you need them in the office past 5pm, make that office policy, but have a good reason.
I had a firm that said, “If you go home at 5pm to relieve your nanny, then I have to rely on the other people who stay later to get work done that I may have given to you.”
To which I replied, “About 150 years ago, a device was invented called the telephone. You can pick that up and call me.”
I didn’t last long at that firm.
But, needless to say, I didn’t think the reason he gave was very good. The next job was better for my family and my sanity.
You can run your firm however you’d like, but understand it won’t sit well with everyone and they will leave until you find people that like it. But lack of flexibility in an era when flexibility is valued is not going to go well for the firm.

I am not Gen Z, but I grew up in home where natural light came before the lights in the house. As long as it wasn't raining, all the window shades were open with all the lights turn off. The only lights that would get used was in the bathroom. Whether its an office or a restaurant, if there are no windows or some natural lighting (even at night time) after awhile I start getting antsy. But if I am in a room with no windows and I am working... I definitely don't want it dark.

Im not gen z but I'd definitely prefer to work in low lighting if I could get away with it.
