re: Why do people walk/jog in the street instead of the sidewalk?

I live in a rural area and have no sidewalks.
I run in the middle of the street. I want to be certain I am seen when a car approaches especially when most are on phones while driving.
The crown of the road is also an easier grade on my legs and knees than running on the edge of the street where the grade of the road makes things un even.
I get out of the way before a car gets near me but the center of the road is by far more visible than the edge.

what are the streets where you are? asphalt? asphalt is no easier on the knees than concrete.
Typical concrete is much harder than asphalt. Asphalt is a flexible, viscoelastic material. Much like your initial reaction to hardwood floors and concrete floors might indicate they are similar, they aren't. The activity of running is a repetitive thing, where a runner builds up hundreds of thousands or millions of heel strikes over the years. If you are curious and don't have a Schmidt rebound hammer handy compare the distance a hard ball bounces off concrete and off asphalt.

The real answer: They are entitled a-holes.

Not so much a big deal when they get hit by a car. What gets me is dumbasses who run in the street with traffic.

This. I live in Mid-City and most of the sidewalks in my area are a mess due to all the oak tree roots pushing them up and making them very uneven. That's an easy way to tear up ankles and knees with one misstep.

asphalt easier on your knees than concrete.
have you not ever run before?

The answer is in the question you asked.
But walking or jogging in the middle of any street is straight up douchebag behavior.

Because we’re getting dumber as a society.

Wonder what the average BMI is in this thread. I’m guessing somewhere between 38-45.

So are the streets, but cars don’t get the choice to inconvenience and endanger those who use the sidewalk.

idk..but I wish my neighborhood had sidewalks..I hate inconveniencing people when two cars are coming or when some a-hole street parked awful.
Posted on 5/19/26 at 12:52 pm to Nighthawk504

In my Baton Rouge neighborhood it’s the same thing
And a lot of my black neighbors like to walk in the street when it’s dark - and I mean exercise, not hood rat shite.
I get it’s cooler but they’re going to get run over.

Can only speak as a runner in NOLA & OM, sidewalks often have vehicles parked with the front or back of the car blocking the sidewalk, sometimes with trailer hitch ball sticking out! The tree roots shift the sidewalks, bushes might extend into the sidewalk and low hanging trees force me to duck while I run/walk to not eat leaves and branches. The roads are a much clearer path but runners should know good routes.
I assume everyone is looking at their phone and I always move aside for vehicles.
Like everything, sometimes people are just assholes though.

I walk in the street because I like to talk to the person I am walking with and the sidewalk is 4 feet wide.
When a car is coming I move over.
Also most sidewalks are jacked up. It is rare you can run or walk 100 feet without some issue, heaves, tree debris, kid toys, car blocking the walk way etc.
**Better question, why do people park there cars 6 inches up on the grass on a roadway that is 25 feet wide? Why can't they put the tires next to the curb instead of rutting up the grass.
They think that random wideload house mover is going to get by with the extra half foot?

I always preferred the streets and thinking asphalt was about 000.00000232% easier on my feet and knees.
Sidewalks had tree roots raising the sections up causing them to be unlevel. Besides, some streets had no sidewalks.
Streets did have one danger...years ago, it seemed that pickup trucks tried to get as close to me as possible in the early morning hours.
