Why do people walk/jog in the street instead of the sidewalk?

The word sidewalk seems pretty self explanatory - walk on the side of the street. Yet people in my area, NOLA & Metairie, seem to think it’s a better idea to walk and jog in the middle of the street. I’m not talking about walking on the edge near the curb, but right in the middle of the driving lane and holding up traffic. What am I missing here?

Sometimes the sidewalks are pretty busted.

easier on the knees. Sidewalks are usually concrete.

I carry too much speed for sidewalks.

If you didn't "miss" them with your car they wouldn't run in the street.

It’s really annoying. They’re walking in the street when there is a sidewalk less than five feet away. At least get on the sidewalk when a car is coming.

Sidewalks? You want to complain about how jacked up the streets are, go walk the sidewalks. It's atrocious.

Because sometimes it's easier. If you aren't speeding like an a-hole then I have plenty of time to get out the way.

This is a disproven myth. Runners still believe it though, putting themselves in danger for no reason.

Alot of sidewalks have a car parked over them every 100 feet, it's usually easier to stay in a straight line on the roads.
What grinds my gears is seeing people determined to keep moving, inches away from a car, when they could easily step on the curb for 2 seconds and avoid all the anxiety

Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?

And walking or jogging abreast, never single file even with traffic.

I run a lot on both and try to stick to asphalt if possible, as it seems to feel better on my old knees.
Research is mixed, though - Attenuation of foot pressure during running on four different surfaces: asphalt, concrete, rubber, and natural grass J Sports Sci. 2012;30(14):1545-50. doi: 10.1080/02640414.2012.713975.
So while forces may resolve to be the same, I am sticking to asphalt over concrete when cars are scarce.

If runners are being rude, just decide to clean your windshield really well as you slowly drive around them.

Like on main thoroughfares? Or in neighborhoods?
If you’re complaining about people jogging on neighborhood streets, you’re a loser.

Too many E-bikes on the sidewalks. Hell, I’d get my arse runt over…
