1990’s Mississippi(most obese then) would be least obese in 2018.

That’s crazy.

Fast food lines with 10 cars deep. People start jonesing if they can’t get their fast food fix, multiple times every week.

Preservatives and other shite.

There is shite in our foods they won't allow in Mexico. Think about that. We eat shite they won't allow in a 3rd world country where some people are starving.

Even our bread is sweet with sugar. Ask someone from Europe to eat some American bread and see what they say about it.

I say this as an overweight dude currently on a diet

Agreed….theosophy kids have grown up now, so we have a whole generation of overweight people.

Sad fact is, there’s nothing we can do to change that now.

I think there are a few reasons.

One is portion size has increased tremendously. A recommended portion size of pasta is 2oz. Meat is 4-6oz. How many people here get a 6oz steak when they go out to eat?

Increased frequency of eating fast food. When I was a kid McDonald's was a once every couple of weeks thing. I'm 34 and my parents weren't exactly the healthiest looking people, but they understood what a proper diet was. Another contributing factor is the breakdown of the traditional family; most households don't have a stay at home mom to cook anymore. Diet is heavily supplemented with take out and fast food.

There are a lot of parents these days that are complete push overs. "Johnny only eats Mac and cheese and chicken nuggets." That's horseshite. My mom wasn't a good cook, but she always had balanced dinners. If I didn't like what was on the plate, I didn't eat. I enforce the same rules with my kids.

This next one might seem from left field, but I think relaxed dress codes and a culture of cheap disposable goods has caused people to not care as much about their appearance. Gain some weight, buy a bigger pair of cheap pants. Gain some more, get some pants with elastic. When we wore more formal clothes on a regular basis, they were expensive. Men would save up for a year to buy a new suit. 1950's housewives owned on average, a total of 9 outfits. They couldn't afford to let themselves gain 5 or 10 pounds. Wearing tailored clothing gives you some feedback if you start gaining weight. Track pants do not.

Last of course is the body positive crap. You don't have to shame people if they are fat, most know they should lose weight, or at least they used to. Putting obese landwhales on the cover of Vogue only reinforces unhealthy behavior.

I can’t believe Louisiana people are fatter than people here in Michigan. I didn’t know it was possible to have a fatter population. Frightening.

The lame excuses are just that - excuses.

I'm a senior citizen at the end of a career exclusively involving information technology - and I spend 6-8 hours every day online.

But I am physically fit & weigh the same as I did 45 years ago. the "secret" is simple - I exercise and have my whole life and I eat reasonably. I drink a little too often and occasionally too much but my weight typically varies within a 2-4 pound range.

Calories in/calories burned. Prove me wrong.

I blame it on the modern recliner.. it’s just hard to get up and out of it once you’ve plopped down.

Sex

It is too easy now. Used to, you had to work for it. Nowadays, everyone will jump on a grenade for the greater good. Tinder, bumblebee, onlyfans and all that shite make sex way too available. Fat is easy now.

One difference I notice is comparing how my grandparents eat to how many adults in 2021 eat.

They only ate 3 times a day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They didn’t snack. Maybe a little bowl of ice cream or something after dinner on some nights.

Rarely ate out. Only on occasion. Same with fast food. Only on occasion. Grandmother cooked almost every night.

I feel like it’s part of a hedonistic culture now. People just want to do what feels good with no discipline. Just give in to every craving in life.. all aspects of life.

30 years ago you at least had to make an effort to go get Shitty food. Now you can sit on the couch, order from your phone, and they bring it to you.

When we were kids we couldn’t come inside the house during the summer. If we wanted something mom would bring it to the back door. We stayed outside until called in for dinner. Most Kids are inside all the time nowadays.
