I weighed about 220 a few years ago - Nobody said anything - that was an unhealthy weight for me - joints hurt - knees hurt - people are just odd about this stuff - are we all supposed to be linebackers in the NFL? I feel a lot better now - and that’s what matters

Cause they’re just frickin lazy. Blame lazy on whatever 127 different reasons you want but the answer always comes back to LAZY. Inherited, learned, whatever….LAZY is the answer and you can branch off from there

People don’t fast long enough to process the insulin in their system…insulin stores fat…even the healthiest of foods produce insulin, if you eat in too short a time period you never process the insulin and so you never burn your fat reserves.
Back in the day, people ate dinner at 530pm and then didn’t eat breakfast until 7 or 8 the next morning. Now people snack all the time, eat too much processed food, artificial sweeteners produce insulin at a higher rate than other foods so people think they are being healthy but they are not…
Intermittent fasting is key to maintaining a healthy weight or losing weight.

Holy fricking LAZY

It’s like somebody just read a self improvement guru book and is regurgitating the gospel. Intermittent fasting is the key to tackling obesity like cramming for a test is key to making a 4.0

Again, the biochemical processing of 'food' is not simply thermodynamic. It involves hormonal control as well, with exceedingly complex interactions that I could go over. The nutritional profile of food matters, regardless of whether you want to blame an 'inanimate' object.

If there was any other disease with the same demographic profile illustrated as in the OP, we absolutely would not resort to frankly idiotic defenses of 'individualism' that we do in regards to food. Nearly 70% of Americans are overweight, and 33% are obese, which seems to suggest questions of individual choice are much less important than the nutritional content of the food itself. At those population levels, suggesting people are continually making poor decisions without a distinct physiological cause that is directly modulated by exogenous metabolites would be insane for literally any other disease category. The sheer hesitancy of actually treating obesity as a pathology is why we are in this position.

Why are people eating these foods?

Because these foods can modulate physiologic elements so that there is limited satiation, absent effects of leptin, no insulin response in terms of fructose, and no rate-limiting step of fructose metabolism until it either enters glycolysis or becomes pyruvate, at which point it can enter several possible metabolic pathways, depending on macromolecular and micromolecular needs.

Listen to me……. Getting in “shape” is 1% physical, 99% mental. Our society is made up of mental midgets. Soooooo, society is fat because it’s easier than being not fat. It’s as simple as that. I spent 20 years trying to right that ship. Ain’t gon happen

What was the percentage of families that had both parents working in 1990 vs today?

High fructose corn syrup

shite is Satan and should be outlawed. It was the primary cause of my gout(no I'm not a fatass only 5'10 and 170 pounds run and workout an hour every day) and kidney stones. I got most of this in unhealthy sports drinks like Gatorade which is all I drank. Cut that shite out(only drink water, eat meat and fruit) and no more gout or kidney stones. Crap is in most ketchups, frozen corn, etc.

Being able to to purchase fast food with food stamps doesn't help any.

It's 100% the Governments fault.

No it isn’t. It is biological. Clearly you are one of the mental midgets if you resort to the same tired mantras without considering other possibilities. It is a great example of the laziness to which you include everyone but yourself.

Cell phones and the internet. You used to have to physically get up and go talk to people. Kids didn’t come inside until the street lights came on.

And since the left likes to bring race up into every conversation, I'm going to play along.

Non-Hispanic Black adults (49.6%) had the highest age-adjusted prevalence of obesity,

followed by Hispanic adults (44.8%),

non-Hispanic White adults (42.2%)

and non-Hispanic Asian adults (17.4%).

Black Power!

In terms of health, absolutely. In terms of pretty weight and fat loss, no. The literature is clear.

To put it simply: calories are calories. Sources of calories and sources of calories expenditure vary, and that formula will include things like your hormones and body processes.

Again, I'm not suggesting that losing weight doesn't have thermodynamic components, I'm suggesting that the hormonal factors to get from a BMI of 30+ to a BMI of normal weight is beyond the ability of most people, because the body will fight very hard to remain at homeostasis. There's a series of new medications coming out for weight management, some of which are rebranded diabetic meds, which will allow for more direct modulation of hormonal factors to possibly aid in weight loss to healthy weights. Ozempic is one, and Eli Lilly has a highly anticipated medication called tirzepetide coming out soon, with both available for chronic weight management. That's probably the only solution we can come up with but it won't work when we have other things driving that demographic crisis. There's no will for systemic solutions.

In no particular order:

Fewer smokers
Starbucks
Eating out more frequently
Portion sizes at restaurants
Plate sizes have increased
Sedentary lifestyle
Smart phones, tablets
Gamers
Using yard crews instead of mowing your yard
Etc

I don’t think high fructose corn syrup utilization has changed much since the 1990s, but I could be wrong.

My mother in law was solidly overweight for years and routinely told me I was unhealthily thin and would shove food at me constantly until I finally told her to frick off. My BMI has been 20-23 my entire adult life.

Welfare allowing purchase of junk food with food stamps. Encouraging people who don’t work to eat crap food.

Almost all welfare people are obese. Food stamps should be for staple foods only I.e flour, raw meats and vegetables, fruits, spices. If you want the privilege to purchase little Debbie’s then get off your fat arse and go to work for it

An interesting study was released that said high fructose corn syrup actually causes the villi that absorb nutrients in your intestine to increase in length. This allows you to absorb more nutrients due to a larger surface area of nutrient absorbing material.

Based on that, if you eat the same diet from the 70's but add HFCS you'll actually be fatter.

With today’s ever increasing stress, coping mechanisms like food, drugs, alcohol, porn and workaholism are prevalent.

Except life should be the least stressful it’s ever been. People stress over things that 40 years ago they wouldn’t give a frick about. This happens when life is too easy.

Stress is when the world is in economic depression and you can’t find work to feed your family then you get drafted into a world war where thousands die each day leaving your family behind praying you make it home alive so your wife isn’t a widow and can be provided for.

Your phone dying and you can’t post your thoughts online isn’t stress it’s an inconvenience
