About five years ago I spent a couple of weeks in Australia. Their diet is roughly the same as ours (hamburgers, etc.), but there were hardly any fat people. They do spend more time outdoors and walked a lot more. The only difference is there food more be less processed?

Look at the modern portion size.

The modern medium was a large back in the day, and a medium is now a small.

You can still see the difference between sizes when comparing Australia to the USA.



I mean, holy shite, our medium is bigger than their large.

We have royally fricked our society, and then add the glorification of obesity itself.

On top of that, 99% of overweight people actually think they are a healthy weight.

Fat dementia is absolutely a real thing.

If you understand this then you understand that whole post you quoted is a load of bullshite. It's sugar either way, it all gets digested and if you eat too many calories it will get stored as fat.



It's a combination of things.

1) We live in an obesogenic environment. Food is everywhere, calories are cheap, and prepackaged food is literally designed by flavor scientists to get you to eat too much.

2) Technology gives most of us physically easy lives. We sit all day at desks, go home and sit on the couch, eat our calorie dense dinner, go to bed.

3) Portion distortion. Portion sizes are out of control. Restaurants, prepacked foods, etc.

4) Liquid calories, particularly in the south. We love our sweet drinks and our alcohol.

eating starchy carbs is ok if you are very physically active. many people eat alot of starchy carbs but are sedentary.

Yeah it’s bad. Nearly 70% of this country is overweight with a BMI of over 25 and we still have morons who insist they are a healthy weight. Then we have people not realizing the risk they pose to themselves for so many health issues.

Several reasons
Lack of physical activity
Lack of understanding what overweight is
Lack of knowledge on nutrition
Lack of portion control
Frequency of eating out
Large percentage of diet that includes processed foods

All these existed 30 years ago but few people checked all of these boxes, now most do.

Main reason is women went to work and became too tired to come home and cook. Easy to grab “fast” food. Slowly, this became the norm. Not eating home cooked meals enough.

Replacing natural fats with sugar started in early 90s

Fat isn’t bad for you. Sugar is. Everything is loaded with sugar now

What? I was confused because he said they were processed the same, which I took to mean they shared metabolites. I mean, given the amount of pathways in which pyruvate is an intermediate, then nearly every exogenous metabolite could possibly be regarded as being ‘processed’ the same.

There is a meaningful difference in the nutritional content of food, and thus processing will be different. Because processing will be different, nutrition shouldn’t be regarded as purely thermodynamic, because regardless, because the body wants both homeostasis as well as conservation of energy. That people can admit that there is an excess of food designed and sold without regard for nutritional content, that should convince people regulation is needed. Instead, people will continually insist that nutrition is always a matter of individual choice, which is an insane way of thinking about it. There are meaningful biochemical processes at play. It’s not different all that different from addiction, in which there are physiologic changes, except the purview is hormonal and biochemical rather than neurological.

Women have been part of the workforce for a long time. Why are we seeing the effects only recently?

Saw a group of 4 people, 3 women and a young boy coming out of the race track tonight. No doubt all 4 were over 250 and all with the same shape. That poor kid couldnt have been more than 12-13 and will likely be a slave to his stomach the rest of his life.
