Because the automakers went EV overboard and have to recoup their losses from not selling them.

You can get a Honda Ridgeline for about $40k right now.

That's a country song right there.
Wish the note for my new truck,
Didn't cost 1200 bucks,
Financed over seven years,
Yeah it really grinds my gears

The cheapest truck on the market is the Ford Maverick
If you consider a front wheel drive, unibody vehicle a truck. It is, indeed, the most inexpensive “truck” on the market, if that’s your top priority.

Trucks have certainly increased in price, but you can buy a perfectly functional full sized truck for ~45k brand new. Adjusted for inflation, that's not far out of line with what trucks "used to cost"
Hell, you can get a ford ranger brand new for under 40k and that truck is about the same size as the 90's/2000's F150.
You can option the shite out of trucks to get them up to 80k+, but those are wants, not needs.

If you pay cash and go at the right time they’ll give you like 10-15k off what the credit people pay
If you can’t pay cash you can’t afford it

The only people I've seen that are emotional are the ones that want them but can't afford them.
The people who don't want them don't care. The people who can afford them don't care

Dudes who used to drive Cadillacs and Lincolns now drive trucks. This has driven prices up for those who actually need a truck. Causes frustration.

You do about Disney prices.

American trucks from the 1980’s that many people yearn for were lucky to make it to 100k miles
The Chevy-Ford automatic [exploding] transmission has entered the room. I know a couple guys that had a huge repair bill on this item. Like 6-9000. I remember my dad had a Suburban 1500 trans rebuilt for $800 around 1998.

Is it because the truck represents a version of Americana that people hope still exists? Or something else.
I think a lot of people are frustrated by the way the price outpaced inflation so much because so many posers "need" a truck. Seems like every accountant and cubicle jockey "needs" a truck now because they go to Lowe's once a month for some begonias.

Funny you mention that, you can get a NICE sedan (used) on the seriously cheap these days. It's kind of funny, my IT guy neighbor and the other neighbor who is a hospital administrator both drive their glamping trucks to the office and I drive a german luxury sedan to my jobsites.

My theory is that Americans want big, REAR WHEEL DRIVE, vehicles and trucks took off when most sedans went front wheel drive and small. And once automakers figured out the crew cab packaging the market never looked back.
Also, Americans are older and fatter than ever before and climbing down into a car is harder.

Every time I see a big pickup truck I wonder where they fall in the Idiocracy scale.
Sure some can afford it and actually use it, but the median household income stats say otherwise for the majority.

I wonder if they made a low tech truck if it would outsell the more expensive models.
I'm talking, no back seats, manual windows, basic A/C and radio, no cameras no sensors, manual transmission etc.
I think there is a market for low tech cars. They don't give you a choice today.

And it was the speed of the price hike. Practically overnight with Covid. In 2019 you could get nicely equipped truck for low-mid $30s. Two years later the same truck was $50k.
