My mother was set to retire in 2009 but the market dip crushed that. She filed for bankruptcy and it was tough for her.
I have a friend panicking about that now. I told her if she is that close to retirement what is most of her money doing in the stock market? She needs to pull it out and think about her risk tolerance. Apparently her risk tolerance is only good if the stock market is going up, lol. I explained to her that’s not how that works.

I mean NO MONEY to even buy a loaf of bread.
When I was married and in college and had two kids I can remember deciding between a few groceries and diapers.
Does that count as broke, I thought so. It is the hardest part for me about being ivorced now and dating, no woman can understand what I went through because all they see is me in my mid 50s making bank and being able to do what I want. Those struggles made me much of who I am.

At one point I was having to routinely make the choice between floating my truck note until the next paycheck or afford gas. This was at a time that my "bed" was nothing but a couple of blankets on the floor of an old house being used to house a radio transmitter.

Me.
Once went a month on nutrias and raccoons. Ramen thrown in when I could swing it.
I remember staying up until midnight when the direct deposit would hit so I could eat. I don't miss those days. One of the reasons I'm so frugal now is that I never want to be in that position again.

I'm one of the best, most well rounded outdoors outdoorsmen that I know. From knowing how to paddle a canoe down a class 2 rapid fully loaded, to camping, to fishing & hunting, I can do all of it, and much of it really really well, and it's because I was dirtfloorcracker poor in college and starting off in adult life trying to save up and get ahead.
I hunted and fished and camped and floated many a river to have protein in my diet, and protein I had.

Since the stroke i ran out of money pretty quickly.. To say out loud that'
2 things I've learned
It sucks to be poor
and
we don't need those expensive things we think we do.
and although I miss a lot of the activities,, baseball games, going out to eat and no regard for the cost, hookers..
I did before the stroke,
those things that cost me the disposable income that I can't do today
I don't miss spending the money on things that don't matter
and that makes me the richest man in the world
no it sucks

Nope. Been making money since I was old enough to push a lawn mower. The hustle hasn’t stopped since then.

I’ve been broke enough to be mad that ATMs didn’t dispense $1s. And that was when they did dispense $5s.

Ah, so going with the old liquidate while everything is low strategy? Odd, but solid advice, if you hate her.

I am almost there. I made a ton of money last year. But my wife spent it all and then some without my knowledge. I have two weeks to come up with another 35k for something that I was not aware I needed. I’ll be able to do it, but after that, a loaf of bread will be a luxury. And yes, I’m an idiot and I didn’t think she would be that stupid. But I overestimated her obviously.

Now would you say that you are Nguyen-ing?

Absolutely. If you haven’t looked at a negative balance on an ATM receipt, I don’t even want to know you.

Hopefully things have changed now
You have pretty much described my now 40 yr. old stepson. Been on drugs (heroin) since his mid 20's with no end in sight other than possibly getting arrested, shot doing a transaction or OD'ing on the shite.
