I've listened to it so many times, it's playing in my head now.

The standard by which I compare every other rendition to.

Can’t deny her talent, but I despise her version because it turned the national anthem into a yodeling attention whore fest. It doesn’t seem as bad now, but for years after her it was absurd.

She sang on the field live into a dead mic. What you heard was a prerecorded version. Essentially lip synced.

Was going to post this. It was recorded, but still beautiful.

In these threads, I like to share this rendition from a bunch of children. It's chilling it's so good.

I'm an old fart but I totally agree. I almost never listen to live renditions of the anthem because of this.

Would have been better without the orchestra. Whitney didn’t need them.

Why? She just sang the hell out of it. She didn't extend notes out or rework the song. Blame those who do that instead of Whitney

Whitney walked so Carl Lewis could run.

I couldn't agree more. My son wanted to go to his High Schools Basketball game the other night and they had a girl sing the National Anthem. She had to try and sing it like Whitney with all of the runs and drawn out words, felt like it took 5 minutes. I'd rather they just play the music instead of having someone sing their rendition of it.

You're both right. I don't think she (nor anyone, really) knew what she was going to unleash by adding the extra bit of rhythm to it. Whitney was a great singer, coming from a background where not changes (not even numerous enough to be called runs) were done in certain places to enhance songs. What followed was a plethora of wannabes who saw/heard that performance and thought "if those few extra notes made it better, I'll add a frickton of runs and it will be awesome!"

It's like women and makeup; it's best when it's used lightly to make the woman's natural beauty the focus, not when it's plastered on so thickly that the makeup itself becomes more of the focus.

Whitney’s was great, but I still get goosebumps listening to the Lillian Garcia version on Monday Night Raw the night after Bin Laden was declared dead.

Agreed.

Disagreed. It's gotten worse. One of the most clear confirmations for me that I am indeed not a racist is that I realized I hate it just as much when every white singer butchers it as when black singers butcher it.

I wish it was only ever allowed as an orchestral recording. I hate this shite.

Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner - Woodstock 1969

No vocals, but my favorite rendition of the National Anthem.

She nailed it, regardless if it was pre recorded, but very nice to watch the video and …not a mask was worn

One of the best singers ever no doubt. BUT… there’s only one way the anthem should be sung and that’s not it.
