I've heard stories that it was playback.
Talking about singing the National Anthem, I just saw Meatloaf's version and I was more than impressed. He went as far as making it sound operatic.

Saw her in concert in Vegas in the early 90’s. Best female vocalist of all-time. I cringe when American Idol contestants sing her songs.
