Hawaii considers addicts disabled and puts them on Medicaid and other welfare programs.
Lots of homeless mentally ill people around Honolulu.
And lo' and behold, the problem has exponentially increased.

He agreed to let me play with him, but he wouldn't ride in my cart, and he barely spoke a word when I tried to make polite conversation. He was an a-hole.
Why so much hostility?

Touche. I visited that rock more than a couple of times. While it's a fine place to visit, I'd hate to live there.

Back in the day, there was a group called Da Hui, a surf gang that would keep non-hawaiians off the best surf spots. They were super violent.

Puerto Rico would not fit in well as a state.

Many of them are still upset that white settlers invaded their islands.

Would be a very bold strategy for the locals in west Maui to revolt against the tourists. That’s the only reason any businesses exist on the west side of the island.
except that tourism has driven the cost of survival way up.

Do they use technology invented by white people?
Air conditioning, cell phones, internet, combustion engines, airplanes, modern medicine…?
If so, then stop using our technology (that’s cultural appropriation) and go back to the prehistoric days.

My opinion is that they are angry at the wrong people.
Their leadership back then could have cut much better deals where all the Hawaiian natives benefitted more greatly.
That is an oversimplification, but if they had played their cards right, all decsendants of native Hawaiians might all be relatively weathy today.

Are there barriers set up that prevent them from participating in the free market?

the locals on Maui absolutely hate white people from the mainland
I can only speak to Oahu where the University of Hawaii was (they were in our conference), but we had guys on their team that would tell us to be careful when walking around Honolulu because there were always “natives” looking to rob you or start some shite. That’s all I got.

Except for the fact that some locals are putting blame on the tourists and are emphatically stating there must have been some "provocation" (some of these same locals also state being a tourist is provocation enough). You must be so happy to live with such wilful ignorance...

When I went, I got yelled at for laughing too loudly in a restaurant. Was told if I needed to laugh then it needs to be a low ha. I won’t be back.

It's not really just the race. It's that property in Hawaii is now so valuable that most locals are having trouble living there so they blame tourists and white people. As a white person I call it racist. But I kind of understand why they are angry.

Hawaii votes dark blue. They care about the next government check, not any businesses.

My brother was stationed in Norfolk, VA, in the navy. He told me some residents had signs in their yards, "Dogs and sailors keep off the lawn."
