Lynyrd Skynyrd was really rough for me. I was in high school when they were very popular. Michael Hutchence was a shocker. Frank Zappa. Taylor Hawkins is the most recent.

No John Lennon on your list? Everyone you said was elderly or in bad health, he was shot.

Dolly is the easy answer here.

Elvis. Not because it was a shock but because of the heartbreak.
I was child growing up in Vegas the day he died. I was riding around with mom in her car and heard about it as news broke over the radio. It was raining that day which was/is very rare in Vegas. Everyone was crying and so was the sky. Even as a young child I still remember the pall it left over the city.
As others have posted Dolly death hits hard but she lived a full life, and she trickled out enough health updates the past few months to prepare us.

Nirvana was trash even with the drug addled emo baby Cobain. What a pussy loser he was.

Elvis is the obvious answer. I was 4 and still remember watching the footage of the funeral on the news.
Of course Cobain but it wasn’t that shocking because he had reportedly overindulged in “champagne” in Italy like a month before his murder, er I mean suicide. Side note, I was at the Smashing Pumpkins concert at Gulf coast arena that night. That show from 94 is actually on YouTube.
Another sad one when I was a kid was Karen Carpenter. Beautiful voice gone too soon.

Elvis for that generation, MJ for the next one
Fun fact: Michael Jackson Jackson’s funeral was live-streamed on TV, and to this day, is the most watched television event of all time.

Hank Williams. They sang I Saw The Light at the concert when he didn't show up because he had died in an accident.

Prince was the most out of nowhere.
