If MJ had died of natural causes it would have been similar to the others but the whole world was glued to that story in the summer of ‘09.
Im sure Elvis was pretty similar given the tragic circumstances.

Thing with Elvis is that he was a dual superstar. He was a superstar musician then made the switch to movie star before going back to being an arguably even bigger superstar musician and doing those shows in Vegas you see on YouTube. Then you add in that he died unexpectedly. I don't think the other people in the list affected as many as Elvis did.

I think Elvis and Dolly got the most reaction.
Certainly people found it at last somewhat shocking when Michael Jackson and Prince died, but I think Elvis and Dolly's passing triggered a deeper and more widespread response.

As someone who was alive for all four, Elvis. He was still in his "prime" when he died. Dolly, MJ and Prince had peaked years before their deaths.

Elvis and nothing else comes close. I was born in 71. One of my earliest memories is where I was in the backseat of a car and my parents heard it on the radio.

I will say that for me, personally, it seems like there was a year period of time where Prince, Glenn Frey, David Bowie, Tom Petty, and Merle Haggard all passed. I'm sure my memory is off and it was more than a calendar year, but it seems like it was just one gut punch after another from my childhood.
ETA- I looked it up. Petty died in 2017, but the other 4 died within 3 months of each other. Wow.

Hell, I'm probably more shocked by the fact Keith Richards is above ground and still kicking at 82.
His odds for making it to 40 were a long shot at best the way he was living life back then.

The death of Elvis definitely dwarfs the others, even if we’re talking worldwide. But he never toured anywhere outside the US. The closest he came to an international tour was when he did a handful of Canadian concerts in the late 50s. But other than those few Canadian shows, he never performed outside the US.
But even with that, his death still had a bigger international impact than any other performer or celebrity.

Too niche and not enough pop appeal. Nirvana was HUGE. Don't get me wrong. But Elvis was much more of a household name than Nirvana.
Elvis died young and it was a total shock.
Dolly has certainly had an impact, but she was 80. No one who dies at 80 surprises anyone.
