If by “outdoors” you mean hunting and fishing, then my answer is Shreveport.

All of my examples have included both although I didn't say it.

I have to be able to fish wherever I live.

A blanket statement of “outdoor activities” is why there are so many different answers. I don’t care to go rock climbing or mountain biking. But would rather be close to hunting and fishing. So there is no correct answer for everyone.

Depending on the outdoor activity, Honolulu has a decent city life and you can go surfing or swimming at the beach or hike or bike on outskirts of city.

How drunk are you reb beer? Shreveport isn’t even worth mentioning in the same paragraph as Denver.

Same with Seattle, you can get off work at five in the winter and still have time to go ski, or hike and kayak in the spring/summer

I did probably 30+ hikes after work in the Seattle area this year. During the week I could get off at 3:30 and get in a 6-8 mile round trip hike. I'd take off at noon on Fridays and could do pretty much any hike under 10 miles in the North Cascades, Central Cascades, Snoqualmie Pass area, or Rainier. I did 3 overnighters on Fridays after work which was great to avoid the crowds. I hate the politics here, but as far as outdoors, I can do some of the best hiking in the world after work with no issues. There's tons of stuff to do in the city as well, but I'd much rather get away from the city if I had a choice.

Charlotte, NC isn’t bad. 2 hours to mountains, 3 hours to beaches. And the US national whitewater center (faux rapids but fun) within 20 minutes or so. Seems like other cities have to pick one over another,in regards to beach/mountains.

For overall exercise, nothing beats NYC, if you want to walk.

I’ll admit I didn’t spend a ton of time there, but Seattle in the summer is pretty damn incredible. Went to downtown Kirkland on a Sunday morning and had breakfast and mimosas and then spent the day just enjoying being outside. Played 18 holes starting at 4pm one day and walked off 18 with daylight at 9:18pm.

And then on a clear day you get this as a backdrop.

Salt Lake City is 15-30 minute's drive from some nice mountain hikes, and 45-60 minutes from some phenomenal skiing.
