reading through threads like these that pop up time to time on the OT it's usually pretty clear that 90% of the downvotes most likely come from yoyos that :
- have never traveled outside the south
- think hunting and fishing are the only two activities that can be considered "outdoor"
- love to bash anything that isn't usually affiliated with redneckery/coonassery
- generally hate texas

open your eyes baws, hop on a plane, put some hiking boots on, go check out a national park or two that isn't a swamp.

the correct answer is a decent city just outside Charlotte.

You can have the benefits of being close enough to a very large city that has a huge international airport. You can live in the suburbs if you don't want the city life, but you're still close enough to do the city things. There are lakes all over the general vicinity of Charlotte for fishing, leisure boating, and fun boating. White water rafting isn't far away either.
You're 2-3 hours from the mountains. You're 3 hours to the beach.
You don't have severe seasons but it's hot enough to enjoy summer in the water, and cold enough to get some snow in the winter.

Same with Seattle, you can get off work at five in the winter and still have time to go ski

Only if you have lighted ski slopes, chief. Sun sets around 4:30 PM in Seattle in December, 4:30 to 5:00PM in January, and before 6 PM in February.

And the closest ski slopes to Seattle are between an hour (Snoqualmie) to 2 hours away...

One thing I noticed was I didn't see hardly any overweight people in Denver and I am guessing it is due to the amount of outdoor stuff readily available to them. Which is impressive with how good all the food was.

Many of these answers, including Denver, don’t exactly fit.

It’s more ‘what city has a great city life as well as being in close proximity to outdoor adventures. Denver, Phoenix, Seattle, Portland, et al come to mind, but none of those cities REALLY have a ton of outdoor options, they’re just close to great areas that do

huh?

i live in uptown phoenix and i have miles and miles of hiking trails and a mountain preserve five minutes away. the country's largest municipal park (south mountain park, at 17,000 acres) is 10 minutes south of downtown. phoenix, at least, has tons of outdoor actives in town and further afield.

Washington DC and close areas (Arlington VA, Alexandria VA, Bethesda Maryland)

So many f@#king trees and parks up here that it's like Ferngully, more wooded than Deep South which surprised me. You can be in a bar/restaurant area and walk behind it to a wooded area with trails that stretch for miles, unseen unless you look.
