When is someone in South LA going to do something nice on a waterfront?

I was in Vancouver, WA this past week. It sits along the Columbia River across from Portland. Over the last few years, they are developing a really nice riverfront area.

Shops, restaurants, hotels, apartments, lots of outdoor spaces, etc. One night we went down there and sat outside at a restaurant along the river... it was an amazing view. Tons pf people out there walking around and having a great time. A number of higher end bars - such as a wine bar and a tequila bar.

It made me thing... despite all the waterfronts we have here in South LA... no one that I know of has really done this. You have a few places here and there along the southshore of Lake Ponchartrain but that's it.

And this isn't just a bash NOLA thread... none of the suburbs, BR, Lake Charles, etc, no one has anything like this.

Why is this?

I haven’t been to Washington. Is it something like the San Antonio Riverwalk?

Lake Charles is trying with the lakefront.

Just about all of our waterfront in south Louisiana is in a swampy location, making it difficult to develop.

I've said for years that I don't understand why there aren't more restaurants overlooking the river in Baton Rouge. Tsunami survives basically on that one gimmick alone.

Because those things on the waterfront here would be washed away every 5 years. Not so much in Vancouver.

I’ve sat in the airport at PDX many times looking at those houses on the hill overlooking the Columbia river thinking about how badass it would be to wake up to that view every morning.

would assume that most would have to deal with getting wiped out every 3 years in a storm

You mean like Mandeville or New Roads? They aren’t huge but they are nice.

For one you’re comparing the scenery and climate of Vancouver, WA to that of Louisiana
