It's all so goofy.

Why don't we call Germany, Deutschland, and Italy, Italia?

Isn’t Germany also Deutschland? Pretty sure it’s gonna still be Germany for the WC.

Exactly. We don't follow this with any level of consistency. We don't call Deutschland by its name, nor do we call Osterreich by its. Germany and Austria, get back to the back of the line.

And Finland and Sweden have the biggest gripes. Suomi is nothing like Finland, and Sverige only tangential to Sweden.

It's Turkey.

This reminds me of a funny ad that Delta had in their terminal “Went to Ibiza, returned from Ibeetha”.

Also Czech Republic is Czechia. There should be some rule against this

How often do people say Untied States of America vs USA or just US.

France is Republique francaise.

It is just the shortened named.

Mexico is officially the United Mexican States.

This is closer to my France example. It is the French republic, we call it France. the Czech Republic has been shortened to Czechia. And Germany is Federal Republic of Germany.

The Turkey one I have no clue when that started.

They decided to have international bodies refer to as this in 2022.

First time I noticed the change in spelling and pronunciation for both of these countries was for the last olympics. And I remember being all "get over yourselves".

You Tube Jimmy Carr
Jimmy Carr has a funny bit about this. "You're in charge, call it what you want. Here's how gangster Britain is."
