Given the World Cup is about to start I did a little reading today so I can be like millions of other Americans and do my once in four years pretending to care about soccer.

I saw numerous places where the Turks are now Türkiye and not the known Turkey.

When did this happen?

Also Czech Republic is Czechia. There should be some rule against this

Not sure. Some time after the start of the war in Ukraine, so 2014 or later. I know because one of my best friends is from Turkiye and I met him in Kyiv before the war broke out.

Also feel like we all called it Key-Ehv and spelled it Kiev prior to the war but now its Keeyve and spelt Kyiv. I don't support these changes

Team USA changed its name and uniforms after intermission of the 1995 Junior Goodwill Games in LA to the Ducks. It happens.

It is the not surprising that all this comes out when we get told we have to pay attention to soccer.

Pretty sure that's their pronunciation of their own country. When I was there in 2022 that's how they said they call themselves.

They decided that a few years back. Same with the Czechs.

That’s just something they tell tourists.

And people wonder why I want us to reject that sport. It brings trouble wherever it goes

It’s always been that in Turkish. They decided to have international bodies refer to as this in 2022.

A few years ago. I don’t write it out all that often, but I can’t even remember the last time I spelled it turkey like the bird.
