Since they wanted everyone to think this is some new place. My wife asked me the other day about it bc she never heard of it until all this shite. I said do you know where, pronounced the ‘Mercia way, is? She said yes. I said same place. She asked why they are saying it this way now, I said F if I know, but no doubt it’s some kind of woke/SJW shite.

Honestly, this has been driving me crazy every time I hear it!

Glad I'm not the only one. I keep thinking the exact some thing every time I hear it said.

I think that is just being literate vs illiterate.

Who cares? I'm still perplexed how someone with a weiner became a girl.

Vitali Klitschko is the mayor of Kyiv.

I "try" to pronounce geographical things like the people who live there pronounce them - including many places in Louisiana.

This discussion brings new back to when Joe Theeesmann (pronunciation) at Notre Dame was pushed so hard for for the Heisman Trophy and became Thiiismann (pron.).

The world needs to unify behind never having to say U.S.S.R. again.

Shouldn't be that big of a deal if you decide to annunciate a city's name based on how that country pronounces it.

Nor should it be a big deal if someone doesn't. Really odd thing for several ITT to be triggered about.

When I was in Turkey they seemed upset when I kept saying Constantinople

Nope. All the TV reporters were saying Ah-mi-crahn. I'm like...y'all, the Greek letter is actually an O!

Yeah, I notice how you almost never hear English speaking news people say Frahhnce when referencing France. And certainly none really ever refer to the country where Volkswagens come from as Deutschland.

Best comment here. It’s fine if they want to pronounce Kiev more like the locals do, but weird timing to be sure. It’s almost like something has to get exploded before the news tries to empathize

We watched it happen with "Cutter" during the Gulf War also.

Up here on the NY stations, I don't hear anyone saying May-hee-ko for Mexico but I hear them saying KEEV for Kiev.

About the same time “The Ukraine” became “Ukraine.”

One set of names is what Russia wants to call them, and the other is what Ukrainians call them.

Putin/Soviet fanboys say Key-ev is in the Ukraine.

Bro if you say May-hee-co you should be punched in the face

And if you say the capitol of France is pare-ee, you’re a homo.

American media virtue signaling

Kiev is how Russia spells it

Kyiv is how Ukraine spells it

I’m sure people in Ukraine are going to bed happy knowing America has been spelling it Kyiv for the last two weeks while the missiles explode around them.

Meh. Officials will be using all methods to indicate its Ukrainian.

Media is obviously going to follow how the White House is s saying the city’s name.

It’s not some sjw virtue signal
