Perfect example. And yet Obama did NOT also say "ahf-gahn-ee-stahn".

I'm happy to defer to local pronunciations when feasible, but it's silly to pretend that every country and language doesn't just say shite how they want to. eg. Literally nobody pronounces "Volkswagen" correctly. Nor should they feel pressured to.

Yeah, I notice how you almost never hear English speaking news people say Frahhnce when referencing France. And certainly none really ever refer to the country where Volkswagens come from as Deutschland.

Don't know about other areas but I hear two different pronunciations of the letters OIL all the time. Some use it as a 1 syllable word and a guy in the same conversation stretches it to 3.

The plethora of place names makes any sorta of 100 percent consistent application of a convention nearly impossible. But it’s not like it’s without precedent.

Mumbai, India was once known as Bombay.

That's totally different.
Cities change when leadership changes. Why did Constantinople get the works?

This is about pronouncing names differently all of the sudden. I thought we used the English words for European cities not the local terms.

Hmm? As Kiev and Kyiv are both both non-English words, what would you presume we call it?

I propose the coining of a fully English word for Kiev/Kyev:

New Keefsville.

Or North Keeferbrook.

You know what I'm saying. we don't say Hravska for Croatia. We dint say Moskva for Moskow. We don't call Greece the Hellenic Republic.

Yes, when place names are not easily pronounceable , we sometimes adopt words in English that more easily roll off the tongue but still have a historical connection to the place we are trying to name.

That hardly factors in to this case as Kyiv and Kiev are both fairly easy to pronounce, with Kyiv being one syllable shorter.

But it still comes down to how we as English speakers pull words from other languages, and it seems more appropriate when your are talking about one culture that you make an effort to pull the words from that culture rather than another culture.

When I turn on CNBC and I hear Shep Smith's pompous arse say "Keev" it irrationally triggers me. Like he gets to dictate THE new Americanized pronunciation when we've had one in place as long as I've been alive. Little things like that don't help the media seem trustworthy or relatable.

Well, according to the post I was responding to, some people apparently have the idea that there’s a giant conspiracy by the “elites” to flaunt their education and make your red-blooded Americans feel stupid.

“Fox News says ‘Usama Bin Laden.’ That must be some sort of psych-op to lower the morale of the average American by making us feel stupid!”

I really don’t get why some of you are so triggered by the correct pronunciation lol.

We didn't say Mosike (the Chinese name for Moscow) either. Moscow is our own word. We don't have a word for Kyiv/Kiev, we've always used another word. If we are "allies" with Ukraine why not use their spelling over our enemy's spelling? Not every language change -- even if done with the intent to manipulate the public's feelings -- is a virtue signal

Italy is that way. Everything is not what we know it as Roma, Firenze, Venezia.

They are trying to pronounce it the same way the people who live there pronounce it, I guess.

No, they don't. Their pronunciation is more nuanced than that. This is nothing but virtue signaling - sort of like when the media just decided it was "cutter" instead of Qatar.

Exactly. I just heard several Ukrainians pronounce it. It wasn't Kee-ev. It also wasn't Keeve. It had a little bit of the -ev, but not so much that it was really 2 syllables.

I think in our American accents, we just can't say it the way they do. I'm fine with Kyiv, but it's not Keeve.

That's another one.

When Qatar donated that pharmacy Pavillion to Xavier it was Ka-Tar. Next time I heard it, it was Kut-Her.
