For some reason when I hear Keeve it reminds me of quief. Maybe it’s just me…

Glad I’m not losing my mind. This has been bothering me as well. I was wondering if I had just invented the other pronunciation.

Perfect example. And yet Obama did NOT also say "ahf-gahn-ee-stahn".

I'm happy to defer to local pronunciations when feasible, but it's silly to pretend that every country and language doesn't just say shite how they want to. eg. Literally nobody pronounces "Volkswagen" correctly. Nor should they feel pressured to.

a languages professor told me the actual correct Ukrainian pronunciation is "KEE-if", rushing through the word as fast as you can

I'm an American, I pronounce it "Keeeee-evvvvv", democratically giving every syllable equal stress. Any bitch corrects me I just correct them back.

This, and the KEEVE thing is just the fake news media tryna be bougie.

I don't give a shite how they pronounce it. But frick Putin for being an evil prick, and frick Biden for his weak arse response and sanctions that don't put any pain on Russian oil and gas.

There is apparently a pronunciation difference, what it is idk.

But the west has mostly used the Russian pronunciation.

Shouldn't be that big of a deal if you decide to annunciate a city's name based on how that country pronounces it.

Nor should it be a big deal if someone doesn't. Really odd thing for several ITT to be triggered about.

When Russia wins can we go back to saying it the right way?

Well, it would be a Russian province, so the “right way” would be Russian, I guess.

is kinda weird to spell and pronounce something from one culture according to the customs of a another culture that it was subjugated by.

No, it’s virtue signaling. And media douche bags trying to sound superior. The media does it every time something important happens in some shithole part of the world they’ve never cared about or talked about before. It’s isn’t some noble effort at cultural respect or sign of solidarity.

Meh, technically a lot of stuff is “virtue signaling.”

For example, putting an asterisk by the word “President” to show you don’t recognize the legitimacy of the president is also virtually signaling.

But just because something is virtue signaling doesn’t make it technically wrong. Sometimes it can be correct at the same time.

It is an old trick pulled by journalist and politicians. It is meant to set them as an authority on a subject. It is designed to make you feel less competent and accept them as being more well versed on a subject.

Jesus Christ, some of you have some touchy insecurities.
