It’s been standard since 2014. It’s supposed to be a way of reducing the effect of Russian imperialism on Ukraine by acknowledging the Ukrainian pronunciation and spelling.

Kiev is how Russia spells it

Kyiv is how Ukraine spells it

I’m sure people in Ukraine are going to bed happy knowing America has been spelling it Kyiv for the last two weeks while the missiles explode around them.

Getting things correct is not necessarily always “virtue signaling.”

It is kinda weird to spell and pronounce something from one culture according to the customs of a another culture that it was subjugated by.

a languages professor told me the actual correct Ukrainian pronunciation is "KEE-if", rushing through the word as fast as you can

I'm an American, I pronounce it "Keeeee-evvvvv", democratically giving every syllable equal stress. Any bitch corrects me I just correct them back.
