Katrina, Camille, Laura in that order would be worst to me. Thank god the surge for Laura hit the more eastern side of Cameron Parish and not the mouth of the river.

Hurricane Camille was one of the most powerful hurricanes to make landfall in the United States when it hit southern Mississippi in August 1969. A devastating tropical cyclone, Camille was one of four Atlantic hurricanes to strike the United States as a Category 5 on the Saffir–Simpson scale, the highest category corresponding to maximum sustained winds[nb 1] of at least 157 mph (253 km/h).

I was only 2yrs old when Camille hit so I have no recollection. However, my sister who was 10 and my parents always bring up Camille as the benchmark. Camille scared the crap out of most everyone.

As bad as Katrina was, that weakening just before landfall was huge

There is only one answer and that Camille. No hurricane ever has made land fall with 200 plus mph winds.

All I gotta say is, Lake Charles was lucky for Laura.

It could have been worse but not by much so saying they were lucky is just plain stupid

Nobody has mentioned Rita? For me it is Ida. First big one I stayed for and never again.

Yeah, pretty sure Katrina was a 5 out in the gulf. It just didn’t make landfall at that strength.

Was it Michael that destroyed the Mexico Beach area of Florida? That one was a bad one.

Hurricane Audrey

Talked to some old timers from Cameron, Chenier Perdue, Little Chenier and Grand Chenier and what they went through that night was unreal.

Alot of those same folks will say Laura was worse, and they knew about Laura coming...

Laura is my answer...yes LC was lucky with the storm surge water, but the rest is self evident.

Had a relative in Bay St. Louis for Katrina.

House was on 20-foot stilts.

When they renovated, they hung a clock nine feet off of the floor to show where the watermark was when they came home after the storm.

Then, they had to rip out all of the Chinese drywall that they used and do it all over again.

All storms suck, no matter how you compare them.

My vote would be Camille.

And this is the type of hurricane thread we need. Not one with a storm headed in.

Hopefully the Gulf stays closed this year.

I think you mean West. The surge was on the east side of Cameron. If she would have hit Port Arthur. LC would have potentially been under water from surge moving up the ship channel. Similar to Ike x 10. Instead the Eye went directly over LC. Johnson Bayou actually had a due North wind from Laura, thankfully

Laura was about 30 to 40 mph stronger than Rita when it made landfall I think. Laura made landfall probably 20 to 25 miles east of where Rita did. The tree damage we had from Rita was worse than Laura. Rita also shite out a ton of tornados. Just goes to show the difference 20 to 30 miles can make.

I live in NW Calcasieu.

Also if Laura had taken Rita’s path LC would have been under water and my roof probably gets ripped off instead of losing a few shingles.

Yep.

Laura's official landfall was at Cameron, putting the worst of its surge to its east. A surge height of 17.1 feet (excluding wave height, so a still water mark) was observed on a shower wall of a second floor bathroom of a home in Oak Grove near Creole.

In the NHC report for Laura they note that finding "still water" surge marks was difficult due to the destruction of so many buildings and homes.
