Halter Marine

I was 15 years old.

It was a different time, you understand.

Good times, worked mostly around 20s & 30s somethings.

They were more serious about work than one might expect in the 70s in the NOLA area.

It was a good introduction for me to real work.

Besides working for my grandmother and keeping the scorebook at the little league field… laborer for a construction company. Did that on my 18th birthday.

I worked for my grandfather at his department store in Marksville, LA. He sold school uniforms and the summers he was very busy. I learned a ton working with him. He was an absolute grinder. I made great memories working with him that I will cherish forever.

Delivering hot tubs for the Hot Tub Warehouse. It felt like I was living in an 80's teen sex comedy.

Dad's Union 76 Service station starting in 1975 at 14. $1.80 an hour. worked from 3 or 4 pm to 9 daily, all day Saturday. Didn't punch a clock.

Thank god I never had to work in a grocery store, fast food or any of that crap. Worked with men who could fix anything. Learned a lot.

This is strikingly similar to a John Updike short story titled “A&P”

Damn, that was a throwback for me. Remember reading it in high school...

...back in 1980 or 1981.

Speaking of which, my first real job in high school was here:

Second half of summer of 1980; I was 15. Mainly worked the Zephyr and the Log Ride.

They only paid $2.10 an hour, less than minimum wage because it was seasonal employment and we were minors.

But I got free admission with my girlfriend any time I wanted to go when I wasn't working...

Feed and seed store the summer after my Junior year. Thought I would be stocking shelves.

First day they asked me if I could drive a forklift! One hour in and I had damaged a warehouse door. Worked two weeks to pay off damage, spent the entirety of my summer in the back of a trailer unloading feed and seed, or stacking alfalfa. Worked w an old black guy and a youngish a-hole. They saw me as their whipping boy, so 12 weeks of busting arse, soaked in sweat.

Learned a whole lot that summer.

Shoney’s Big Boy Restaurant. Absolute blast. Manager was a young guy, early 30’s, that would roll up his sleeves and help whenever we got slammed.
I got off work one Sunday morning at 2:45. He called me in at 8:00, saying the dishwasher guy walked out. I got there and there were 32 of those tubs full of dirty dishes. Boss rolled up his sleeves and told me if I would get them loaded, he would pull them out when clean. We knocked it out with a quickness and he apologized for having to call me back in so quick.
The way he treated went a long way in teaching me how to manage and work with people.
Completely different company and job, but when I moved to Knoxville after high school, I became a retail manager in 2 years. Credit that to my first ever boss that was awesome to work with.

I worked the City Park softball fields in Nola. There were hitting cages and four fields with adult league games every night. I’d have to trouble shoot the pitching machines, turn the field lights on, do some other stuff I can’t remember. Was a great job for High school.

Bonus: the street along side the softball complex was a meet up spot for gays. gay men would park along the street looking to meet up. So I was never lonely.

I went to northwest Arkansas and clocked in at A&W hamburgers basically for party and hanging out cash. I was 17. I emptied grease traps and scrubbed grease off the floors. Ended up with free burgers and fries though
