So my wife is due September 9th, but the OB doc just told us we're moving ahead of schedule. She looked at me and told me to go pack my hospital bag.

My wife packed hers and a bag for our newborn son, but what do I put in mine?

I'm thinking:

- a couple changes of comfortable clothes
- shower shoes
- a bunch of snacks
- cell phone charger
- laptop and ipad (w/ chargers)
- deck of cards?
- pillow
- blankets
- sleeping bag (apparently the couch bed is hard as a rock)

Anything you guys think I'm forgetting?

Just go home and shower and change. You will want a break from being in the hospital.

Your wife will pack some stupid shite for the kid to wear in pictures. Don't ask me why but she will. Don't for get toiletries. Maybe a bottle of bourbon. You are going to be board.

Youve about got it covered though.

Don’t know, had to hit the hospital at 3:30 am when water broke and didn’t have time to pack. Don’t forget your toiletry bag, everything else looks good.

I slept like the dickens while we were in the hospital waiting, trying to get in as much as I could while we waited.

Go home and change.

The break from the hospital will be a huge breath of fresh air

Camera, if you plan to take pictures that aren't on your cell phone.

Toiletry bag.

A towel, the ones there suck. If you plan to shower there and not go home, which I'm guessing you are since you said shower shoes.

Go home. Seriously. Give the baby to the nursery for the 1st night, tell your tired wife to sleep as much as the nurse will let her, and go home to take a shower and sleep in your bed.

You will need your energy in the coming days. If it's your 1st kid, you'll want to keep it all night long. But you may regret it the next morning.

ETA: And if you stay in the room with her, you'll wake up every hour with the nurses as well.

Change of clothes and iPad with charger. You're not gonna sleep for shite anyway. They come in every few hours to check on stuff and will wake you up.

My wife told me to go home and check on dogs and get some sleep, but I couldn't leave her there.

ETA: I left to go home and shower, but couldn't just go home and sleep. Should have... haven't slept a full night in 2.5 years.

I did not pack a bag for either one of my kids. Just showed up and hung out although they came pretty quickly.

Considering my company, that would be a conflict of interest (and insurance coverage).

It'll be at Centennial and we did a tour already. But that was for my wife, I know that place pretty damn well.

And she'll want a break from everyone as well.

Unless you live like hours away, just go home and relax for a bit. You will not relax for like next 15 years.

I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you live a long ways from the hospital. A newborn baby sleeps a lot and you can always run home to get something. You pretty much nailed the list though. Clothes, toiletries, and ipad are the biggies. You forgot booze if you drink.

Yes. Best advice is to let he nurses take the baby at night.

Definitely do this.

Take advantage of the nurses while you can

She's giving you orders. Tell her to stay in her lane and you will stay in yours.

If you are at Woman's we were told this is discouraged and they will send the child right back to you the second the baby is showing hunger cues.

Not sure if that is actually true, as my son got sent straight to the NICU, but its what one of the nurses told me.

You’re way overthinking this. I never showered at the hospital either time...went home and showered/ changed, relaxed for a little bit and let the dog out several times a day.
