I don't want to get yelled at by some uppity nurse.

A gift for the father.

THIS^^^
seriously, I went home and fixed a drink, sat on the couch and processed everything. Got a long hot shower, changed, napped for a few hours, and went back. My MIL and the nurses were all over the situation at Woman's - I was unnecessary. As a new father, you're pretty useless the first night.

If you are at Woman's we were told this is discouraged and they will send the child right back to you the second the baby is showing hunger cues.
That's pretty crazy. Had both of mine at Clear Lake Regional. The 1st kid wouldn't (and never did) latch, so bringing her back repeatedly would have ruined my wife's mental state. The 2nd latched immediately, and they brought him back to her a couple of times the first night. But then immediately took him back to the nursery.

Bring a cup for cover. Make your drink in the bathroom.

Your wife will pack some stupid shite for the kid to wear in pictures.
I've already slipped these in the kid's bag:

Don't forget smelling salts... Child birth is an assault on the senses

gum... it helps to chew gum while your wife's placenta hits the floor.

frick that, unless there were complications. Both my kids went home the next day.
My wife had a complicated C section. She had to stay longer.

Congrats man.
I don't even remember those two nights in the hospital. It was a blur. My wife was 2 weeks early and I hadn't packed a bag before hand and I was still half drunk when we drove to the hospital at 530am. My hospital bag consisted of 1 pair of sweatpants, one pair of socks and 6 pairs of underwear...
It doesn't matter what is in there, you'll be fine.
One piece of advice. Even if it's a baby friendly hospital where they keep the newborn in your room at night, if they offer to take it to the nursery for a few hours, take advantage of it! You won't get uninterrupted sleep for the next few weeks and your wife for months if she is breastfeeding.

Other than the first night, which I didn't sleep at all as he was born at 3:30 AM, I went home to sleep and take care of our dogs.
I did nap for a bit later in the day, and the couch bed wasn't bad, but nurses were coming in constantly and I never could sleep for long. Plus family visiting.
Fortunately we only live 15-20 minutes from the hospital as long as it's not rush hour traffic so it was easy to go back and forth... which we both ended up doing for three weeks while he was in the NICU.

Earplugs if you're able to sleep with them in at night. Headphones for your laptop, ipad, etc.

Bring a nail file too. Newborn fingernails are god damn razorblades.

No, but it's not like they check all the bags.
My brother brought a bottle of bourbon for me the next day and was stopped, but he hadn't even taken it out of the brown paper bag inside the grocery store bag.

We're at risk for a C-section because she's got slightly high blood pressure right now and is a very petite lady and the baby is predicted to be 9+ lbs at full term
Me and my siblings were all huge babies and are somewhat tall/long people. Her family is a bunch of munchkins.

I don't see why not. We brought champagne in a big rolling cooler and popped bottles in the room with family afterwards.
