It sounds cliche to say, but you should only “marry” a “best friend”... and if the person you with isn’t in the list of “best friends”, then keep looking.

First time was for looks, second time was for personality connection

Better have a good sense of humor. Laughter will bring you a long way once the physical stuff lessens. Not going to be hot and heavy forever.

When choosing your spouse

I don't remember choosing my spouse, but I knew very early on she was going to be my wife. I also don't remember ever making a list of qualities I was looking for, but when she came along I knew she had qualities I wanted in a life partner. Pretty, caring, strong, independent, selfless, thoughtful, charismatic, and on and on. Almost 20 years in we're both still very much in love, but there have been a lot of bumps along the way.

We have very different personalities, and share only a handful of shared interests outside of our family. We came from very different backgrounds. Neither of us have ever pressured the other to change to fit a certain mold. I love her for who she is, and she loves me for who I am. Do I wish at times that she enjoyed going to live music events as much as I do? Sure. But that's not her, and that's not what I married her for, so I don't try to force her into it.

Not uptight, low maintenance, ability to adapt, speak sarcasm, not lazy. Have to share some common interests.

They either compliment you or control you. That is the only two options you truly have. Pick a side.

Similar interests, different traits, if that makes sense.

I'm much more laid back than my wife, but we both enjoy the same things (travel, hosting/entertaining, food, drink, etc...). We balance each other out, I ground her a bit, while she pushes me (especially earlier in our relationship).

This is the exact dynamic of my marriage.

politics are tied to personal beliefs, like abortion for example.

Those are big picture, macro type issues though. I cannot see where my wife being against legalized abortion and me supporting it would matter.

Your leanings, whether conservative or liberal need to be in harmony

This is not true at all and the voting disparity for this is sad. Mature adults with opposing ideologies are able to discuss controversial topics without getting offending or belittling their partner. I lean right and my gf leans left, but she is by far the most rational woman I have ever met.

I went for smoking hot, volcanically angry, impossibly irrational, consistently ungrateful, verbally and emotionally abusive , jealous and controlling . It seemed to have worked out pretty well so far.
