re: Was Saban truly better than Bear?
Posted by Tornado Alley on 5/22/26 at 1:18 pm to prplhze2000
I think so because Saban accomplished so much in so little time compared to Bryant.
Saban coached college football for a full ten less seasons than Bryant, at a time when it was at its peak in terms of competitiveness.
Look at who Saban coached against, in his same conference:
Urban Meyer (two national championships)
Kirby Smart (two national championships)
Steve Spurrier (one national championship)
Les Miles (one national championship)
Phillip Fulmer (one national championship)
Gene Chizik (one national championship)
Jimbo Fisher (one national championship)
Ed Orgeron (one national championship)
This doesn't even count the excellent coaches who didn't win it all, such as Mark Richt, Gus Malzahn, Hugh Freeze, Lane Kiffin, Dan Mullen, Josh Heuphel, Bobby Petrino, etc.
Look at it this way - here are the SEC national championship winners during other than Alabama during Bryant's SEC years and Saban's SEC years.
Bryant:
1951 - Tennessee
1952 - Georgia Tech
1958 - LSU
1960 - Ole Miss
1980 - Georgia
Saban (in ten less seasons):
2007 - LSU
2008 - Florida
2010 - Auburn
2019 - LSU
2021 - Georgia
2022 - Georgia

IN THIS THREAD - LSU folks are gonna stick their head in the sand and pretend like diversity on their campus is celebrated.
How many threads on the OT about "LSU campus life" and "changes on campus" have been made this year alone? Probably 50

Boiled peanuts are more prevalent as you go east from the Mississippi up through Georgia.

I have made my first sourdough starter. It’s 1/3 c plus 1 tsp plus 1.5 tbsp bread flour and 1/3 c water. It’s been vigorously fermenting for two days. I’m about to discard half and feed it.
I want to make a loaf for toast and sandwiches. But I don’t mind if it’s round or in a loaf pan.
What’s the easiest method of baking? I planned on using the King Arthur no knead sourdough recipe.

re: Can John Mateer make a Year 2 jump
Posted by Tornado Alley on 5/7/26 at 9:33 am to OU Guy
I expect him to, yes. He has played a ton of football and is very experienced. He now has a year of SEC play under his belt too. A lot will depend on if OU can find a few playmakers for him. Another thing is SEC teams really limited his running this season. That was a major part of his game at Wazzou, but the LBs he is facing in this conference are much more athletic than Wazzou's opponents. Maybe OU can scheme some designed runs for him which could open up some passing lanes.

I can easily craft a list that leaves him out
You can't craft a list of the top ten SEC coaches that leaves Steve Spurrier out under any criteria.
Even assuming you wanted to base it on national championships alone, that wouldn't work, because there haven't been ten SEC coaches that have won more than one.

I'd throw Spurrier in off the cuff, but a deeper dive might disqualify him.
Under no circumstances is Steve Spurrier not in the top ten coaches in SEC history. Only Saban and Bryant have more SEC championships and more conference victories than him. He also revolutionized the conference's style of play, slinging the ball around the yard at a time before that was commonplace.
